Permalink Song Rights

New Topic

Hey all,

We're just about to record a cd for our band and I've been researching getting the rights to the cover songs (the cd will be about half original, half cover). I'm able to purchase the rights to the less obscure covers, but two of them, Cat on a Hot Foam Board by the Dimensions and Surf Party by the Astronauts have proved a lot more difficult to track down.

Any Suggestions?

Thanx in advance

BTW come see us at the Beale Street Bar and Grill in downtown SF this thursday night with our buds the Gillbillies!!

This topic actually brings a coupla questions to my mind.

First, as El Cap gets ready to release it's first recording later this Spring (just a 7" with 2 original tracks), what do we need to do to copyright OUR songs?

Second, one of the songs we play (and the Cap'n, James wrote) borrows the main riff from Link Wray's "Branded". This won't be on the 7", but is this a problem, and if so whatta we gotta do to record/release it?

If there's an old post on these topics please point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Jet

This link within CD Baby explains How to Legally Sell Downloads of Cover Songs. It may help provide some direction as I believe you can work royalties paid from CD sales in a similar fashion - that is if you don't pay for the rights in advance through an agent.
