We're playing Bloomington, IN for the first time ever, with local surf mavens Thee Aquaholics and The Katatonics on Friday, December 12th. This will be our final show for the foreseeable future, as we focus on getting ready to record the next album. We expect to again play some eight tracks from the upcoming album, test drive them a bit, see how they work. So, hope to see some of you there!

We need a big Ohio surf show next year with The Madeira headlining.

There used to be an annual show like that in Oxford, OH (close to Cincinnati), the Oxford Surf Fest, outdoors on a large stage in a park in the center of this college town, put on by some Cincinnati surf music fans. It came to an end a couple of years ago, alas, but it was a great time while it lasted. (You can see a bunch of videos from it on YouTube.) There was also one attempt to put on a fairly serious festival around surf music in Dayton, OH, in August of 2010 - the Festiki. The guy behind it went ALL OUT, got a huge stage set up in some campgrounds, had all sorts of vendors, did a TON of promotion, radio, press, everything, and had a bunch of bands play, with the Space Cossacks headlining (and the Madeira playing before that) - and then the afternoon of the show there was a string of massive and violent summer storms that moved through the area. Face Palm They stopped in time to still have most of the scheduled bands play, but it was enough to keep the crowds mostly away. Very sad, it really could have been something great. I think he lost quite a bit of money on the whole deal, too...

There is also Hot Rod Hula Hop being hosted in Columbus, which often has surf (as well as rockabilly and lounge) bands. I think they stopped doing it for a few years, but I believe it's now happening again. And there was a guy that was bringing a lot of surf bands to Cleveland for a while, including the Madeira a few times, but he tragically passed away a few years ago. So, there HAS been a lot happening in Ohio with surf music, but with pretty mixed results... Confused

I had know idea there was all this history......dismal history! We'll be playing more and more in the coming months locally. We were met very warmly at our first gig a couple of weeks ago. they seemed to really enjoy surf. Can't wait for the next one with our new drummer Jay. Absolute powerhouse drummer. Takes our game to a whole new level. I'll keep you posted as to how Ohio reacts to that.

That's fantastic, Dave! Keep knocking 'em dead, and I hope we get to play together soon! (And it's really not a 'dismal' history, there's a LOT of surf going on in Ohio, and has been for a long time, which is pretty great. It's just that a few things that could have really helped make it bigger didn't happen, which was sad. But you should definitely try to get to know the other Ohio surf fans and musicians - there are surf radio shows in both Oberlin, OH - not too far from you, if I'm correct - as well as Cincinnati - that's pretty amazing!)

Big Surf Show - Oberlin, OH: http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/24712/
Rockin' & Surfin' Show - Cincinnati, OH: http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/2663/

Guy AKA Midwest Surf Guy on SG101 DJs the latter show, and Tom DJs the Oberlin show - Tom is also in a surf band Surfer Rex. And there are a LOT of surf bands in Cincinnati! Check 'em out.

Dave, as far as Hot Rod Hula Hop in Columbus goes, check this out: http://fraternalorderofmoai.org/events/hotrodhulahop/
Number 6!!!

Check out the bands: http://fraternalorderofmoai.org/events/hotrodhulahop/entertainment.htm

They had two great surf bands playing this last time: the Coffin Daggers from NYC and the D-Rays from Athens, OH!

I am fairly confident they'll be doing it again next year. Unfortunately, this last year it was held the same weekend as the SG101 convention. The Madeira was invited to play but Dane and I had already committed to doing the Atlantics tribute at the Convention, so we couldn't be there.... Sad

The whole band is excited after our practice Wed. I've been playing on and off since the late 70's and the practice with the new drummer on wed was the most intense music I have ever been associated with playing. Playing Tranquilizer and Exotic at 170 BPM were jugular moments for sure.

I had talked to Todd from Surfer Rex many times and will be doing a surf show in Cleveland at some point with another local surf band called The Beyonderers who we opened for. Here's some photo's and a review of the show.

This is great information Ivan! Looks like a great event in Columbus. I think I had talked to Eric from the D-Rays online before. They always play at a big festival in Nelsonville Oh. I need to find out more about that gig. Looks like a pretty huge all genre event.

Thanks for all the info Ivan. We'll keep hammering away at Ohio. Definitely looking forward to getting us midwest surfers together someday to play and thrash for a weekend!

So, WOW, that was FUN!!! This being our first time in Bloomington we had no idea what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the most memorable shows we've ever had! There were 98 paying customers there (!!), and they were INTO IT! Many women, lots of dancing throughout the night, great and extremely supportive and enthusiastic club owners and staff, just a wonderful night!

The Katatonics got the night off to an explosive start with their set of punky, MoAM-ish surf, made unique with the addition of standup bassist, slapping that thing in a true rockabilly fashion. They just added the rhythm guitarist, who was really good, and adds a lot to their sound. Chris on drums and Karin on drums are the heart and soul of the band, and are really passionate about surf music, though they are fairly new to it. But they had a lot of energy and many very cool originals! They started the evening off in rockin' style!

Thee Aquaholics have been playing around Bloomington for many years now, and I can't believe that we've never gotten together before now. The band is led by Ross Danielson on lead guitar, who's been playing surf since the early '80s. He recently lived in SoCal, where he got to know Paul Johnson, John Blair, Dave Wronski, Dusty, etc., and even got play in the Link Wray tribute show in LA a few years ago. Upon moving back to Bloomington he reactivated Thee Aquaholics, and they were truly impressive on Friday, looking sharp in retro suits, playing very faithful trad surf with a 4-piece lineup (both guitarists on Strats - yeah! Twisted Evil ), almost all originals, with only two covers: the Ventures' "Fuzzy and Wild" and the Vy-Dells' "Unknown". These guys get trad surf! All the players are excellent and did their jobs exactly right with Zack on bass being the most recent addition to the band and adding some youthful enthusiasm and energy - he was into it! It was an immense pleasure to finally get to play with them, and Ross as well as the rest of the band (in addition to Zack, Dan on drums and Ian on rhythm guitar) went above and beyond in welcoming us and being truly kind to us! I'm sure we'll be playing together a lot more in the future!

We were a bit worried playing with our Showmen/Surfer amps as the ceilings are a bit low, but it turned out great. Almost from the first note we got an amazingly warm and enthusiastic reception, with at least 10-20 people dancing on the floor in front of us the entire set, which was really nice! We played eight songs that will be coming out on the next album, to be recorded in March, and you can see the videos for all eight songs in this thread: http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/25194/

The owners were thrilled with the turnout and were extremely nice to us afterwards, which was pretty great. All in all, we had a complete blast! We hope to be back in Bloomington again very soon, the scene there is HAPPENING. HUGE thanks to Ross, Zack, and Chris for doing such an amazing job setting up and promoting the heck out of this show - thanks very much, fellas! Oh, and big thanks to Chris Miller for driving to the show all the way from Louisville, KY, and taking and posting all the videos! GREAT to see you and your super-cool homemade Mosrite replica - what a beauty!
