There is some question as to whether The Ventures ever used the Fuzz-Rite. Nokie is quoted in the official Ventures biography ("Walk Don't Run to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: the Story of the Vntures", by Del Halterman, 2008), "The transistor fuzz box I had been using for years was designed by Red Rhodes" (p. 160). Nokie goes on to explain that the Red Rhodes design was used in the Ventures Model Mosrite Award Amplifier and he thinks Ed Sanner was using Red Rhodes circuit design when he made the Fuzz-Rite. I don't know whether Red Rhodes' fuzz pedal used germanium or silicon transistors. -Marty

I remember a few fuzz sounds by Ventures records in my head. I guess they used germanium fuzz boxes.
I once had the ashbass fuzzrite clone. This is a cool fuzz sound definitely. Then I switched to Solasound Tonebender. The yellow one. This one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFe8CKPiXgQ
This video is not really good, but this is the good pedal.
I also have a silver one. They are both new. They sound incredible. The sound is MUCH richer than by ashbass. The Tonebenders are very flexible in sound AND Volume. If you need to be loud while playing with a loud band this is no problem with those Solasound pedals. They are about 200+ Euros. Worth the money. They are waaaay more flexible than all those Mosrite fuzzes. BUT if you need this thin spaghetti fuzz, maybe the Mosrite fuzzrite (or ashbass) is better for your need. …so you have to buy different pedals to check them out. I would suggst to start with the yellow Tonebaender. Maybe you are more than happy with this!?
But you asked for a DIY pedal, so the Solasound Tonebender sound could be a good basic.
Keep us updated, please!

The ZVEX Mastotron does a good job of nailing most-all fuzzes, including the Fuzzrite. It has so many variables, you can really dial it in to get the exact sound you want from any amp/guitar combo. It's by far the most flexible fuzz I've ever used; and I've used or owned almost all of them.
I have both three and two knob tonebenders. The two knob might be my all time favorite fuzz...but it doesn't sound like a Fuzzrite IMO.

Yes, yes. The Tonebender has got a different sound.
For me the Tonebender can sound like an expensive chainsaw and the Fuzzrite is more cheapo chainsaw. Which does not mean that is more bad! It is just a bit an other sound.
The chainsaw sound in letters is: "Krrrrrrrrkrrrrrrkrrrrrrkrrrrkrrrrkrrrrrrrrrrkrrrrrrr!!!!" Wonderful!

Very interesting answers! Thank you guys!! With germanium transistor the DIY pedal costs 95 euros ( silicon 85 €) .... but is the better than my Merkin fuzz? I must think about it

Ah, interesting answer.
So my suggestion is: Build a germanium AND a silicon pedal.
It sounds not so expensive. So, why not?

Pretty much every fuzz you would hear in a mid-60s recording I would imagine to be a germanium, whether custom made or one of the classics. The FUZZrite has a sound all to itself, and if you want that sound, I wouldn't look anywhere else. But, even after many years of switching between my Maestro FZ-1a,a really early Tone Bender and a few different FUZZrites it's not so easy to describe their differences. Suffice it to say that I almost always use the FUZZrite when looking for a LA Wrecking Crew or Spaghetti Western Morricone sound. Btw this is my 1st post on SG101. Glad to meet you guys. I signed up so I could comment on a record review Noel Squitieri just posted for my band Said The Ripper's debut release and I saw this post…my fave subject. Check out his review and follow his links...plenty of FUZZrite to be heard. http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/25154/

I'm having a fuzz crisis right now, I'm going through them like crazy trying to find 'thee' one. I'm paying very close attention to this thread as a result.
Tell me which, if any, fuzzes will sound passable with heavy reverb?

With reverb, when recording or fooling around at home, I like the Mosrite best of the bunch. Live I use one of those big Colorsound Supa Tonebenders with much less reverb. The Supa has more bottom so I feel it more on stage. Wouldn't use it for recording authentic sounding 60s stuff though.
