Permalink Strings For Jag

Tried both Ernie Ball and D'Addario roundwound 10's sets on my Jaguar. The Ernie Ball had a darker tone and was lower in tension. I used D'Addario's and never looked back.

I have found that D'Addario strings are accurately sized while some other strings are actually smaller than what is printed on the package. I had Fender and Ernie Ball strings with this problem, not enough tension compared to D'Addario. I set the trem on my Stratocasters to float, so any change in tension ruins my setup!

I also use the D'Addario flatwound .012 strings on my Jaguar. I would be willing to try the more expensive brands like Pyramid, but I'm happy enough with the strings as they are.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Ive just put D'Addario .12 flatwounds on my new jag too.
Setup needs to be done but decided to get it done properly by a luthier that knows jag's Smile
Sunday going to drop it off.
Some things he will do include:
Widening the nut a bit for better fit of the .12 strings
bridge adjustment and fixation in correct position "still the original bridge though.
He will shim the neck a bit coincidingly with a higher bridge to increase tension there and beter intonation.

Well that's what he explained on the phone
Cant wait to feel it when its finished Smile

Hey just thought I jump in here as well... Long time lurker, new to surf and have a surf green VM Jag on the way. I plan on using D'Addario .12 flat chromes as well. Should be here on Monday so looks like I will doing the "setup" thing all next week Big Grin

Welcome, LL! Congrats on the new Jag; the first thing you're very likely to need is wider slots in the nut to accommodate the heavier strings - they come from the factory slotted for .009's and will bind up on .012's, making stable tuning impossible. I wouldn't even attempt setting up the rest of it without taking care of that issue first. Good luck and good picking!

Yes, jump in here. Welcome!
12flat chromes will work good for a nice surf tone I guess.
I have 4 (or 5?) Jaguars. I can not say I take this string set for Jaguar. each jaguar is different! And every guitar has oa own setup, an own neck/body angle! Many things come together. But a guideline in gauges for Jags is for me: 12 (or 13), 17 (or 18), 20 (plain!), 32-34, 42-44, 56
If a Jag fits thicker strings I play the most thickest strings. sometimes it takes a bit time to find the best strimgs for your own.
I play mostly rounds. But flats are also cool for this nice surf sound!
If your 12 flats are good for you and sound good: Play, be happy and don`t think about strings further.

Twang cheers!

A good set up. A real good set up. This the key to a good guitar often!!!! never forget this when you think something is not soooo good as it should be. Try to correct it on your own at first. So you learn for your life.
Meanwhile I know what I can do by myself and what not. Sometimes I give a guitar to my guitar tech/repair man for a good setup and be happy when I got it back. It is worth the time and maybe a few bucks!

Twang cheers!

Thanks everybody! I have been trying to "Soak" up as much setup wisdom as the old brain pan can take. Yup the nut slots will be the first thing for sure Cool Well after I play it stock until my fingers bleed... As far as the flats go, never had them and the Strat has rounds so I figure what the heck. The rest will be surf and learn as I go...

Set up is what matters, just having that neck shimmed right and the bridge nice and balanced.

I use .11s on my Jags, which is maybe a little too light. I should really be using .12s to match the .11s on my Jazzmaster.

But... There aren't really any .12s I like as everything has a wound G, or isn't nickel, or roundcore... I'm picky...

Dunlop Heavy Core 12-54 Nickel. Just put them on. Really like that tone.

I use .11-47 thomastik flats on my Jag and it is real easy to play, but the 47s are a bit light on the bottom. I use 11-50 stainless flats on my JM an it feels about right for me.
