So I'm sitting at work today and hear the owner of a rival TV station in town died over the weekend. He was older than dirt so it wasn't a complete shock. I knew he hosted an American Band stand type show in D.C. back in the 50's but what i didn't know was his house band was led by Link Wray! And to top that off he co-wrote "Rumble" and several other tunes with Link. I was shocked.
I'm talking about Milton Grant who owned quite a few Fox, CW and independent affiliates along the east coast. I left the press release at work but I can post it tomorrow night if anyone's interested.
Sort of an obscure name with a big contribution to the music we love passed away.

Isn't that one of those all-too-common cases where some producer/manager/engineer guy got his name on the writing credits even though he didn't do anything? That kind of thing happened a lot, especially to Link.

Link was on the Milt Grant Show and Milt requested Link and the gang to play The Stroll (a Diamond's song). They didn't know it so they just made up a song which would later be called Rumble. I don't know anything about "co-writing".

I went looking for the thing I read where Link Wray said he didn't know how Grant got on the writing credits, but of course I can't find it now. All I could find was in the liner notes to Rhino's best-of that said what Wraydar mentioned, plus Grant became their "de-facto" manager during that time period.

If you find it, please drop me an e mail or something. Often, you don't hold your competition in high regard but then I saw that about the Link Wray connection and started feeling kinda bad. I should have known better.

It still happens all too often - you won't find any songs on a Madonna album that she doesn't get a writing credit on. Even though 'Ray of Light' was written by an obscure 60s UK band and 'Stop' was written by the sadly underrated Joe Henry for example.
Due to the fact that writer's royalties are much higher than performers.
