...whether it's a club, a car show, a brewing company anniversary party, or...in front of some guy's garage for a big block party! If they like surf, we like them.

You guys are breaking the 1 fedora per crew rule!

Hey, I'd be happy to do a block party gig, looks like fun!

Actually, the bass player is being docked some of his pay for not having his Panama hat on!

Dig that Premier drum.

Is that a gold piccolo Premier snare also???
Looks like the hi-hat is talking a walk Wink

The fedora duplication was upsetting to me as well..normally we avoid that. I was so traumatized I could hardly play. Usually the kick drum is the renegade but I guess it was the hi hats turn and yes, that is a gold (I wish, but actually brass) piccolo Premier snare. I built this kit up from early 60's Premier orphans that had no wrap, bad wrap, extra holes, etc. Plugged all the holes, refinished the interiors, wrapped in aqua glitter and used Roger's swiv-o-matic mounts. My favorite kit by far. Jesse

Hoping to catch the Aces at the beer show this Saturday! You can all where hats as far as I'm concerned.

We've got to get out there and do a gig together.

Aces High!

Welcome to SG101 DrumMechanix!

Cheers,
Jeff

I intend to make the trek to Denver to hear you guys someday. Keep playing!

Since I have taken the bold step and posted something. I thought I would add some details about myself. I am 66 years old, haven't dealt with middle age yet much less being a senior. Actually still deciding what I want to be when I grow up. Have always loved instrumental music..Duane Eddy, Johnny and the Hurricanes, Link Wray, LONNIE MACK. I am a huge Astronauts fan....lived in Colorado during their heyday and was fortunate enough to see them live several times. Could never figure out what the heck Gallagher was doing on the drums.. must have been it had something to do with Premier drums and is the reason they are my favorites to this day. Started playing surf in basement bands in high school, kind of left it behind when the British invaded. Then left playing drums behind for decades. Took it up again about a dozen years ago. First just headphones listening to the Astronauts and trying to learn Jim's chops. Never thought I would ever be in a band again. Met some guys wanting to start a surf band and was the first drummer in the Aquasonics. Did that a while, then played Rockabilly for a couple of years. My 15 minutes was to play at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake Iowa for the 50th anniversary of Buddy Hollies last performance. Wall to wall silver hairs...grannies in poodle skirts.. but what a great event. Missed playing surf... and helped put together the Royal Aces. Been playing 50 gigs or so a year with two of the greatest guys ever..John and Kevin. No drama...No substance abuse...No inflated egos.. Just play music we love and get paid for it... who could ask for more. My other claim to fame is building custom Speed King pedals (see drummechanix.com). Crazy how many SK fans there are. Will probably do 200 pedals this year. Had one go to Charlie Watts even. Enough self promotion, just thought I should introduce myself since I piped in. Thanks to all on this great forum about a great music genre. Jesse

Welcome to the site Jesse, great to have you. So cool you got to see the Astronauts!

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

I swear I heard an organ..

I think Kevin dropped the organ in the course of a re-enactment of how Sam Eddy became the Revels' bassist.

Yep, the wild K man did launch the keyboard into the crowd at a gig last year...attempts at CPR were futile and it ended up in the trash. It had a setting called "Junk organ" that was by far our favorite... wish I had noted what brand and model it was because we have yet to find a replacement. This crazy new "organ" effects pedal that John has does an amazing job though...just don't want to overdo it. Jesse

Still gotta get on video Jesse's illustration of how to play the drum part for Banzai Surf three different ways: straight rock, surf, and Gallagher. He sort of sketched it out one night for about a minute as he was packing up his kit. I just stood there dumbfounded and sort of getting it.

I've seen three or four incarnations of the Royal Aces. I make the current one 2.3 or something like that. The ace Ace is Jesse. I've seen a couple different guitarists, though John's been it for some years now, and three different bassists including Sonic Fesker briefly. Also two different organists, one Kevin wearing a second hat. Maybe it was a Fedora. I'm not counting three or four guest guitarists and other dignitaries who've sat in at various points.

The Aces are not Colorado's only or oldest or purest surf band, but they are the hardest working and they may have played more gigs in their time than any of the rest in all theirs. They've never met a strip mall bar or a private party they couldn't handle at least once, and they don't take themselves very seriously. They have a phenomenal, ever growing setlist of originals, surf and instrumental classics (many unique to them, at least around here), and surf adaptations of other (unusual) material. They are, I believe one can say, sui generis and, well, unique.
