The only argument for a 4th wave is how the distribution and promotion has changed. And this is caused by myspace and the death of the small labels who would actually release surf. It may not be a new wave, but the industry has had a paradigm shift and that is effecting how surf music is discovered. It is way too easy to get your music heard these days, and it is too easy to share your music. There is no standard for releasing your music anymore. Anybody can put anything out. In my opinion, this is a bad thing.

I think the dividing line between 2nd, 3rd and 4th wave is legitimate only to a point. In "Pop Surf Culture," the 2nd and 3rd were defined almost generationally. But, of course, there is crossover. The Insect Surfers, for instance... where do they fit? They've been around for all three waves, and they are as good as ever.

If there was a 2nd wave, I kind of think it was defined by the punk and new wave era. The 3rd wave hit big during the '90s alternative and retro-everything and indie film boom period. The Phantom Surfers cap it off at 1997, when the wave crashed, and perhaps that is true. There were SO many surf bands then, and distributors stopped carrying new surf product, according to one friend who was a buyer at Tower Records in the late '90s.

Yet, at the tail-end of that 3rd wave, there were some bands that sort of watched the ship go down, like the Ghastly Ones... and they found a way to make their music even better in the 2000s. I feel the same about Man or Astroman? and a bunch of other great '90s surf bands. Plus, of course, there are newer bands, which could be considered 4th wave, that did not benefit from the publicity that Pulp Fiction afforded a lot of '90s bands. So maybe it is a different era?

defining waves via distribution/promotion channels...that's actually not a bad idea...

But it isn't entirely impossible. The second wave was indie labels, correct? And the 3rd wave mostly was, but in my opinion their is a clear distinction between the two.

1st wave is easy due to major labels, and the possible fourth is easy due to digital distribution/myspace.

The Dragsters were on Island Records.

There were lots of cds put out in the 90's by the bands themselves.
its just that most people think of the ones on lables.

and the 1st wave had plenty of indie label and self released 45s.
there are cd and LP comps full of rare obscure 1st wave tracks.

I voted no. But please wake me before the Tsumani hits.

CUTBACK

It's SURF music. We should be on wave 547 by now.

I cannot claim to know what is going on in the entire country but, with the amount of bands currently active on the east coast, it would be pretty easy to assume that a 4th wave is at the very least on the verge.

i love resurrected zombie threads...new life for dead topics...

perhaps sg101 has something to do with a perceived resurgence in the waves of surfdom?

Maybe it's the 4th wave of this thread. But, the distribution hasn't changed...

Better the guy resurrect this thread than start another...

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

It's a music industry paradigm shift, that is what is different. Whether you can call that a "wave" or not, is debatable.

i think you're right jake. the music industry has radically changed over the last 50 years and mass communication media has changed as well. the sea and the waves change constantly--so does the music. just dig it as it comes man!!!!!!!!!!! Agree

Enjoying the surf,sun and sand!!

Please use this thread for discussion on waves of surf music.
