Your plan is good, I would recommend doing it in the opposite direction. Fly a week sooner to the San Francisco area, do some touristy things there, head down the coast and plan to finish in SoCal for the convention.

Couple of advantages to me, you'll increase opportunities to see some of the bands for the convention since some of them will play up north and work their way south. If you do Hwy 1 you'll have the ocean on the right which makes it easier to pull over for the occasional picture (or scarier depending…).

Santa Barbara is worth a night, or San Luis Obispo. Either will break up the trip nicely and not make the drive such a grind. I'm partial to San Luis Obispo because I live near there.

Let us know what you like to do and we could make some recommendations. For example Hearst Castle is at the southern end of the Hwy. 1 drive and could be worth a visit.

i did a last second right turn into hearst castle last spring. it's pretty cool. i plan to tour another part of it this winter. there's an incredible amount of 'stuff' in it. plus you're not far from morro bay and the 'rock'.

A Rumsfeldian question on which one. ("3 minute decision & the first 2 are for coffee.")
The SG101 Convention, end of story.

By all means if NorCal must be an arrival/departure point treat yourself and make the Hwy 1 trip. Used to do it regularly between Monterey/Ft Ord and home in the valley. Not like you're going to become a commuter. At least do it once so when you get back you can have that to think back on rather than, "yeah, we shoulda..."

What a neat thing to plan. Smile

I think this is excellent advice! I lived in SF for about 5 years, and when I left, I took the time to drive down the coast until San Luis Obispo where I turned east. I'm so glad I did. Sure, it's long and curvy, but it is just magically beautiful. I think you will be very happy ending your trek in Southern California with this community. You're going to have such a great time!
