What's up surfers?

I've just finished my first 12 demo surf/guitar-rock tracks. I guess that could be called a record Smile

https://soundcloud.com/daniel-hc

I would be absolutely delighted if you would give it a listen and maybe even some feed-back. Which are your favourite tracks/riffs/grooves etc.?

Best regards

Daniel:

Great Songs! I know how hard it is to write instro tunes and have them be different but the same....

Here is my take as a fellow instro-song writer:

Everlasting and twilight: Could use some more dynamics on the guitar A sort of swell keeps listeners attention as well as space between the notes.
Rainbow: Dig the non-trad drums. Kudos to anyone who can incorporate weirdness into surf music. Same comment guitar could use some more dynamics.

Pilgrim: That hook bass line is the key. My favorite song. well done.

Knockout: Had a hard time getting past the Cure intro bass and melody. Awesome song but I still have the Cure in my head.

Monroe: Drums and guitar are both very busy. The guitar could maybe be simplified to not step on the drums

Fast Train: More bass. this one a total groover bring the bass out front.

Nightmare: Seemed weirdly syncopated. Gotta watch out for complex drums/16th and 32 drum beats with staccato picking. It is easy to get out of sync. Guitar could be simplified to avoid stepping on the drums.

Kruezberg: This song is awesome and could be backing music for any surf/skate/mountain biking vid. Well don.

Believe: Old school. Made me think of hot 60's chicks in bikinis..... Picture best fits the song.

All in all great job. Keep em coming. When I get mine posted you can rip into me to return the favor!

Hope that helps.

Shop hard for a drummer. You've got some great riffs and tone.

Noun
record (plural records)

  1. An item of information put into a temporary or permanent physical medium.
  2. Any instance of a physical medium on which information was put for the purpose of preserving it and making it available for future reference.
  3. A vinyl disc on which sound is recorded and may be replayed on a phonograph.

Daniel - I find many of your riffs interesting and enjoyable. I must admit to being quite stuck in my thinking about surf music having some connection to the 'first wave' circa '63...not specifically all elements...for example, I would have found it much more compelling if your recordings included organic percussion.
There also needs more 'air' between the mic and the amp (for my tastes) without the use of an echo. I suppose I enjoy reverb more than echo repeats.

So where do you go from here? Will you continue to develop these demos?

These are really just demos. With no use of amps or real drums. It's all made on Garageband on my iPad. With the use of real guitars though.
I've put together a real band - two guitars, bass and drums - as used on these demos.

Regardless of my earlier comments, kudos to you for putting together your compositions and all the best to you going forward. As a sketch pad, GB is a great thing. As each year gets behind me, I crave the "realness" of actual performances and real air - not because I think those tools are bad, moreso because of how sweet the organic stuff hits me and it just makes a bigger impact on me on a gut level. And I think this kind of stuff actually benefits from having some lo-fi elements to it, IMHO.
In other words, these demos are "tasters" of things to come and I sincerely look forward to hearing your band recordings!

And, btw, Daniel, that it one gorgeous photo of the young ladies of Surf. What is the source? That one would be great as a wallpaper. Wink

Is a great job and the sound is very good for a demo. The drums seem real, what plugin uses? The sound of guitar and bass is very very good. Was recorded with real amps and mics?
My conclusion: very good songs and sounds really profesional.

Tasty guitar sounds, nice picking under compression. You really need to find some mates to do this stuff live and record that. BTW, it feels Danish. Crafted, cool, precise.
I think if you jammed out live in a combo, you could get away with playing a lot less – it's as though playing into GB by yourself you were making up for lack of feedback from mates by cramming in lots of stuff that would overwhelm in a combo. Pretty impressive!

Squink Out!

It was just some random picture I found on Google. Can't remember the source!
The drums are looped from actual tracks - guess you could call them stolen. Heh heh. See if you can find the real tracks they are taken from.
No real amps are used - only Garageband plug-inns. I've used a real mic for the vocals.
Thanks a lot!
