Wish me luck. We've got a show on monday, and my bass player had to bow out. Normally I'd get a sub, but I'm out of town, don't have time to rehearse etc. a wiser man might just cancel, but I've decided to do a guitar & drums only set.
I will use a loop pedal on a couple tunes, but I don't want to rely on that too much (plus I am not very good at looping!) so I'm trying to arrange things to be as thick as possible on solo guitar. Lots of pick & fingers and such. My theory is that (if all goes well) the stuff will be stronger and easier to play when I'm reunited with my low end.
anyone ever try this? I'm hoping it'll be "edgy" and "spacious" not just "thin" and "crappy"...

This happens all the time and you're a brave man to go ahead. And not necessarily an unwise one either. However, though it's probably not an especially practical use of time in some ways, it can be wise as you add pieces to your repertoire to figure out what happens if there's no bass or no drums in each piece. I've seen people mess up where they didn't need to by not thinking ahead to what has to be left our or adapted in a set, without, say, drums. It feels like everything contributes at about the same level in all songs, but that's not true. Three seconds without the drums or the bass is enough to make a mess of some pieces.

More reverb, more lows on your amp, and turn yourself up... You'll be fine!

Check out their song "Armada" pretty impressive tune/instro attack. Blew me away when I heard it on KXLU's "She Rocks" program.

Don't worry! Just listen to a couple of Flat Duo Jets / Dexter Romweber Duo instrumentals and you know it's gonna rock! They even did some cool covers of surf classics which are among my favorite versions.

I play without a bass player all the time. Gives you a great excuse to be louder or play with a big 15" speaker. And a little mo reverb with an ever-so-slight delay will make your sound "Sound" bigger.

The early Cramps never used a bass player and totally rocked. By the way, the aforementioned 'Jucifer' (are they still around?!) were a sight to behold(saw them twice). There was the heavy metal boyfriend on drums, and the gal guitarist rocked a blonde fall, huge fake eyelashes, platform boots, and a flying V guitar, and stood in front of a Stonehenge-like wall of Marshall stacks. The vocals were always of course completely inaudible, but the cds were interesting!

Tuning your guitar down to Eb makes a big difference also. SRV played a lot of tunes in Eb. On a strat it add a surprising amount of low end growl that can round out your sound- more that 1/2 a steps worth...

I decided (after considerable messing around) to use my new guitar, which is a reverend PA-1, their kind of Gretschy thing with filtertrons & a Bigsby. it sounds fatter than my guild, which has strat pickups etc. I feel like the guild cuts better in a band, but the reverend is just bigger sounding.
