Two very good friends just stopped by and gifted me with a brand new Squier VM Bass Vl in white with the tortoise guard!!!!! They ordered it from the Fender rep as an intended Christmas gift for me but it just came in on monday. Wow. Mine arrived playing great, intonated and the vibrato works really well, stays in tune with no unwanted noises, catches or creaking. I'll probably change strings I'm sure. Heavier low E would help as many here have noticed and done. Despite what I do for a living I'm not big on modding anything if the instrument works for me. It's very, very cool. I can see what all the rage has been about. The gift givers found it very funny that it arrived on the day before the record was released. They so hoped back in December that is would come in and I'd use it on some of the new songs. I've been asked to play bass with some guys near where I live and I'm considering it. They have a Bassman 300 that I can use but I need a bass. I don't want to spend a fortune so I am wondering if I should get a Bass VI or just pick up a Mexican Standard P-Bass. Would a Bass VI be a good choice since I already play 6-strings or are they better suited to specific songs/projects? This band is a "hard rock" instro band; not really surf. However, I personally wouldn't part with my P-bass even though I own a Bass VI, because it's is noticeably deeper if you really wish to add bottom end into the mix. Maybe it's just the strings though, they're a bit thinner on the Bass VI, but I can definitely hear a difference between the two. — Mike http://www.youtube.com/morphballio Top

It's really a nice instrument for $300 and plays great. granted the strings leave something to be desired (La Bella flats coming in mail) but otherwise, it's great right out of the box. One thing, though – no whammy bar came with it. Is this normal? Should I call GearNuts and tell them to send me one posthaste? I feel something is missing in an offset without a wiggle stick on it. — Squink Out! Top

The stock string set's low E is way too flabby. The Squier is an interesting artifact of industrial design. Looks cheap overall, but has so few functional flaws that it's totally OK. I won't list the flaws – it would be persnickety – because it's obvious the factory has to cut corners to make the price point of $300 shipped. We are living in the golden age of cheap guitars. Makes me worry about the Indonesian workers who make these bargains... — Squink Out! Top

I like this more for low twangy lines or defined Tic Tac. I can always palm mute for a more vintage sound. Just how it ended up working best for me.
