For me it will always be The Chantays....having grown up in a little beach town in central California I was lucky enough to see them 'live' in the early 60's along with most of the first wave surf bands at the RoseGarden Ballroom in Pismo Beach. Thanks for posting all these other versions too as some of them are just great. —The TakeOffs |

My favorite version is from none other than Mr. Gerry McGee, especially when he and Don do it together with the song Diamond Head. —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New Singles "Finish Line" and "Paradiso" on Bandcamp and website. Last edited: Sep 29, 2014 16:08:20 |

I was always partial to the Agent Orange version, but that Hot Butter version has me all excited now —Danny Snyder Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

Another vote for the Chantays! I also really dig the first Chantays album. There should be more piano players in surfbands again! —Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin) |

The Chantays is my favorite, but I also like: The Nobles - The opening glissando is really cool - I really like the three guitar approach of the Astronauts version too. I was hoping to do this one for the Astronauts tribute last year, but we would probably have just screwed it up. —"You can't tell where you're going if you don't know where you've been" |

Some how I missed out on the Astronauts version. I love it. Thanks for sharing. |

Interesting, pulled out 2 copies of the very well done Surf Legends and Rumors comp., and the 1988 release has Pipeline, the 1995 does not, replaced with Intoxica (The Revels). |

I'd go Lively Ones and then The Astronauts. I really first heard the Lively Ones version first as far as when I bought that compilation Pulp Surfin. Of course you'd hear the Ventures version everywhere in movies/tv. But that was the one I dug into the most. —Get wet and loud wit... Abomionable Showmen FB Showmen Twitter |

Supposedly, the version on the "Legends and Rumors" CD is 'unfiltered'. The released version has the highs EQ'd down a bit to reduce tape hiss but the CD version has the highs intact. At least, this is what the liner notes have to say about it. I used to work near Wenzel's Music Town in Downey and went there many, many times in the 80's and 90'. Once I asked to use the bathroom and there on a shelf above the toilet was the 'vault' where all of the tapes were stored! The shop closed in 2001 so I hope the tapes found a good home. http://acerecords.co.uk/intoxica-strange-and-sleazy-instrumental-sounds-from-the-socal-suburbs —If it ain't broke, fix it until it is. So here are some interesting versions of Pipeline. This has become an obsession. Trombone Pipeline ala Brian Setzer! Of course he attributes it to the Ventures. Also, does anyone know if the Beach Boys ever recorded a version of Pipeline? —Jeremy Last edited: Oct 02, 2014 08:33:31 |

Can't beat the original, IMO. Johnny Thunders' version is my favorite of the less traditional ones. Didn't see this one mentioned yet: —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |
