I have everything but the power supply in my hands. All I need now is time. It will be at least 30 days before I can build an enclosure. My brain is working on something a little different. I'm looking forward to this project. Smile

Looking forward to seeing it.

Me too! Yes

for TAD pan
for exemple
banzai electronic
Tube Amp Doctor (surprising isn't it )
tube town for accutronic

Great experience with the Surfy Bear here. I ordered one, it arrived quickly, got it up and running in about 30 minutes. The PCB has large eyelets for the connections the user is required to make so even an unsubtle solder jockey like myself gets a wide margin of error. I haven't built an enclosure yet; just put the controls on a cardboard box so I could test it. I haven't A/B tested it with my Fender tank yet, but it feels and sounds in the zone. I'd definitely reach for this over the FRV-1 stomp box.

Also, Bjorn was quick to answer a couple of questions I had about an on/off switch and pilot light.

Please let us know how it sounds compared to the tank! I'm really curious Smile Is it responsive to playing dynamics?

Already answer and it is yes !
i will see if i have time to make a vid for that
but it is interactive with the playing (not like a frv1 who break ears)
the more you attack the more it drip but it is controled by picking

i don' t have a tank at home (but already try one)
difference between fet VS tube
sound really near cause of the spring ,a tank with tube drive the signal like the surfy bear
the 2 are annalogique then same rection to playing ,surfy bear is rethink or the real circuit
for the grain there is no tube tube in the surfy bear then you will lost the specific grain of tube ,then less crunchy tone that tube done (but tell me who make crunch a reverb tank ? or overdrive one ?)
the fet in are the more near equivalent of tube in electronics componement they react really near ,look at for exemple the catalinbread effect lot of have a fet circuitery to make the preamp react like tube

If Surf music had its Nobel prizes, Bjorn would deserve one for bringing affordable spring reverb to the masses Thumbs Up

I will probably order one when my DIY to-do list clears up a bit. Heck, if I didn't already have a tube tank I'd get one of Bjorn's kits right away.

Old punks never die... They just become surf rockers.

I second that nomination! This will end reverb hunger worldwide.

Since this is a 'class A' amplifier it consumes about 2x 2.5W.
If no air is circulating the heatsinks can be real hot, the MOSFETs can handle 175deg C.
For a real compact design I recommend moving the MOSFETs to the back of the PCB and let the enclosure be the heat sink. Just remember to isolate the MOSFETs to avoid short circuit Smile
If you like, I can arrange a PCB with backside MOSFETs.

Question of a confused electronic noob:
So the MOSFETs COOLING FINS must not both touch a metallic enclosure, because it would provoke a short circuit?
Or is it good for them to touch the metallic enclosure, to "let the enclosure be the heat sink"?

Yes you are right.
Normally it's not important to isolate the heatsinks. But of course, it is easy to add an isolation pad and a nylon washer. I can put those on or send to you if you need them. Send message or mail me!

Since I keep getting fuzz in the reverb, I am assuming it is no other issue than the pan being worn out. So I ordered a new MOD pan from Antique Electronic Supply (my very favorite and trusted parts dealer), which should be here in LA from AZ by Monday. I hope to God the new pan solves my fuzz issue! I have been wanting a clean+drippy reverb for a long time!

Squink Out!

Hi JObeast,
I got a fuzzy tone from one of my pans. It got a raw fuzzy tone, like something is loose and vibrating with the springs. The same for you?

In some cases the gain of the driver circuit is to high. For example if you got a high output pickup and turn the Dwell (and Mix) all the way up. This sounds more like overdrive. If this is the case, you can add a resistor as shown in the design doc.

don't know if the youtube compression let it pass ?
but i try to make you heard the react between low attack and hard

Just installed a new pan and have another demo of the FetVerb.

I don't know how to describe it other than the reverb signal is fuzzed and not clear. A lot like the Gibson Reverb III that I am replacing! I jusat hope it's the pan and I haven't screwed up the board somehow. bjoish wrote:

how do you set up it ?
cause if with 5 5 5 or 6 6 6 you have fuzz it is probably the pan
even on my little vox who crunch very easy ,the reverb don't crunch at all

stratdancer ,it is not surf at all ! Big Grin

It is fun to see that in another thread there is a FIGHT between tube and solid state amps... but over here everybody is happy of having a solid state pre-amp Big Grin This makes no sense!

So ALL OF YOU in this thread love Quilter amps I assume..., no?!?!?

Lorenzo "Surfer Joe" Valdambrini
(www.surfmusic.net)

hope to try one ,one day
cause i am not a guy who judge without trying
the guitarist of bang mustang says it is fabulous ,and i have heard lot of guys who like it

I would LOVE to try Quilter Steelaire. Being pretty messy with my equipment I just love the idea of not having to maintain it, turn ON - GO, turn OFF and run Smile
(Lorenzo, I hope you are treating well MY HH Amp somewhere in the back of Tiki Room ?
'coz I'll be back for it Smile

Not surf but you might like it:

with the fender reverb many guitarists experienced a slight volume loss when you turn on the reverb - is this also happening with the fet-reverb? and would it also be as complicated to mod away?

Quilter seems interesting! Smile
I wonder if I can find any shops here that have them...

Since the Tone-Mix-circuit is identical, this volume-loss effect when using a foot switch should be about the same. The balance between the dry and wet signal depends on the settings of the controls (Dwell/Tone/Mix).
With this old circuit it seems difficult avoid some volume (or tone) change. Cry
