Inspired by Kahuna Kawentzmann's surf band Google map, I have created one for us here at SG101.
http://surfguitar101.com/bandmap/
The initial version lets members add bands to the map by filling out a form. You can leave a URL and a short note with the band also. You can also state whether the band is active or not, and then filter results by this. I thought this would be cool because not being from California I have little feel for where all the 60's bands where from. So I'm hoping we can add them to the map also.
Anyone can add any band. To encourage this, I've introduced a new "map badge" that you will receive for adding a band. This will be displayed on your profile and forum flair just like the other badges.
When you add a band it goes through the usual admin approval process. I debated about doing this, because although it is more work for me it allows me to catch typos and duplicates.
Please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions. Have fun, I think this will be really cool!

So where would you place Dick Dale? At 29 Palms? The site of the Rendezvous Ballroom?

at the Gillette Mansion he lived in at the end of the Balboa Peninsula,
where the wedge is.
I know its after his 60s heyday, and before the 90s comeback.
When I take people to the Wedge, I show them the house and say DD used to live there.

Looking good Brian.
Just a suggestion, how about adding a "new!" tag next to the link in the left menu to draw more attention to it?

Thanks Brian, this will be a great resource for all surf music fans and bands. If you find you get a lot of 60's bands, maybe there can be a way toggle them on or off? Or maybe toggle active vs inactive?

Yeah you can filter on all bands, only active, or only inactive.
Edit: Using the form at the bottom of the map you can choose what to display.

Thanks to tonewoods and Danny Snyder for being the first to add bands to the map. They both submitted bands within the same minute of each other.

Great idea Brian, THANK YOU, I just added 'Don Bale & PanKZerotti', we are having our first gig next Saturday
PS I think it would be nice to somehow distinguish old/non working bands from new/working ones. If it's possible to have a different colors of those "reverse drops - pointers". It would be more useful, if when traveling you look at the map and contact people in the area and organize jam :-), just an idea

That still might be a good idea to use a different color. I'll see if I can do that.
One thing I noticed is that if you give 3 bands Berlin Germany, for example, as their home, they all stack on top of each other and you can't distinguish the pins on the map. So you may want to be more specific if you use a high population city.

Added The Revomatics (Milwaukee) and gave the location data as Lucky Joe's Tiki Room, as they are often found there as a house band. (This particular watering hole is located as such in Google maps.)
Now to find someone on this side of the state....

What is about bands with the same name?
I`ve noticed somebody put The Astronauts up to the inactive band list.
But there are the german based Astronauts also. They are an active band.
A short mark for such bands? Astronauts (US) and Astronauts (Ger)?
