I like the Challengers version with Hal Blaine rolling the snare throughout. Challengers Pipeline

I have heard a lot of versions of this I've never heard before in this thread, which is awesome (especially The Eagles), but The Chantays original is transcendent. It will always be in my top ten favorite songs of all time, period.

Curse you, Jeremy!
Search continues, surprisingly turning up some pretty cool stuff. I especially like the first one - they get a pass for referring to the Ventures.
I know there are plenty of Jack White haters, but I don care what you say - for him to have done this at that gig is pretty sweet.

It must give the guys in the Chantays a thrill to see how many different covers of their tune have been created over the years. I agree with Richard, the original means the most to me, but seeing all these different versions is very cool.

That's awesome Jeff. That actually does capture some of the atmospherics of the original. What a talented guy. And yes Surfaholic, that is a great version as well. Here are some interesting versions. The thing that prompted me to start this thread is that this song really seems to have transcended the surf genre in popularity and popular acceptance. Seemingly becoming some sort of standard for the american/world soundtrack. Enjoy these songs and please put more of these up if you know some good ones. I like the last one in particular, he should have called it "Bagpipeline".
I have never seen the guy doing bagpipe surf covers, and you have made my day

I'm partial to the original but these are worth a listen:
just found this and it is awesome!
Davie Allan (with Dusty & Sam)

Del Casher at Deke's Guitar Geek Fest (more Malaguena than Pipeline though):

Taimane on Ukulele, starts with Miserlou then turns into Pipeline:

the number one for me is and will always be the chantays version. i still remember the first time i heard it when i was about 9 years old, on a family vacation in new england, coming out of the juke box while i was standing with my dad waiting to pay for our dinner.
the many other versions are all good too and i know some people don't like it, but i like the stevie raye vaughan/dick dale version also.

I agree about the original. Those kids really nailed it. A real marvel when you think about it--something so evocative with such subtle dynamics right out of the gate like that. I have an alternate of Pipeline on an early copy of Surf Legend and Rumors, that is missing from the later release of that comp. The tape was discovered on a shelf in the back of Wenzel's record shop in Downey, where Pipeline was recorded.

Chantays version is my favorite. But the JFA and Agent Orange versions bring back memories of skateboarding with a beat up jam box covered in punk and skate stickers.

It's unashamedly gimmicky, but the Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan double neck version never fails to make me smile.

I have a copy of that comp as well, and what I heard is that it's not an alternate version (it doesn't sound like it to me) but the last one taken from the original master. Bob Spickard told me at the HB Pier after the '09 convention that it was at some point destroyed by moisture in his garage. Shame.

I agree with Lorenzo. The original is my fave for mood and execution. It is also one of the first surf tunes I heard, and learned to play (at 14 years old).

I agree with Lorenzo and Rev. The original can not be beaten in sound and mood!
@Rev: Oh, you started guitar learning at the age of 14? Cool! I started seriously in the age of 29… Grrrrrr!

Hey Ralf,
I think that just means I'm a slow learner.
You learned fast since you are surely only 32.
My first 3 songs were Pipeline, Wipe Out & Rebel Rouser. My band was me and a drummer: long before The White Stripes.

Very cool that you got to ask Bob Spickard about this. I don't think it's an alternate take either. My wording was misleading, so I'm glad you clarified. I'm away from home for a few days, so I can't get to my copy (or the liner notes) to compare it to the original release and say what audible difference there is.
