This thread is best when it is about the Pharos... Tony sent me another photo from the same gig: —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Rereading and loving this thread. I think we are still wondering about the basis of the band's name and who played sax. |

I was re-reading this thread while searching for Pharos data... one of the Zappa archive sites claims that The Rhythm Surfers - Daytone D-6301 ["502" (Like Getting Pinched On A 502) c/w Big City Surfer] 1963 was actually The Pharos... there are enough similarities for it to be true... La Puente is adjacent to West Covina, which has been cited as home base for The Rhythm Surfers, The Spectrums, and the Hydraulic Raisins. I just found this site and might be able to add some information. I am Greg Tangonan, the drummer in the original Pharos. Those are really old pics, I hadn't seen in a long time. Nor had I heard the two cuts Pintor and Rhythm Surfer for a long time. Surprised to see it on YouTube and on Miki Dora's video. Cesar Aliviado was from Mactan, Cebu, Philippines and finished high school at La Puente High School. Same with Bill Bontempe. I was a high school junior at the time at Pa Puente High School. Yes, that is all the drum set we had. |

Wow Greg! Thanks for stopping by! Did you play on Pintor? Do you remember anything about the writing or recording of that song? For many people (myself included) it is a very special song. —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

It's probably a special thing about the Pharos mainly because that's pretty much all there is. I bet if there was more it would be special, too. |

Great thread! Pintor is one of the greatest surf songs off all time IMO. —MooreLoud.com - A tribute to Dick Dale. New Singles "Finish Line" and "Paradiso" on Bandcamp and website. Last edited: Jan 19, 2015 17:49:18 |

I had missed this! It's a shame neither of those guys came back to answer the follow-up questions. I had no idea this was based on a traditional tune. —The Mystery Men? |

Someone contacted me and asked for Pharos photos and I searched and found this thread. Unfortunately the photos I had posted earlier were lost when Dropbox stopped allowing public links. So... I dug them up and will post them here. Enjoy!
