There are many fuzzrite pedals out there and there are the early versions and later silicon versions. In either version the transistors and cap choices make or break the sound. Well not really break..but there is a balance between the transistors used and their values, because this pedal uses a blend control to cascade one into the other. As simple a circuit these pedals are, its takes work to get "The sound". The time I have to spend sorting through NOS transistors, measuring each one to find proper spec for my build, is mind numbing tedious not to mention how many I have to throw away. Also, to create a pedal that is free of radio interference and general hum, theres a lot of shielding that needs to be added to this fuzz.. Not many are willing to do this and they put inferior versions out.
I'm not posting to tote my own build, but rather I want to say how impressed I am at the Hallmark "Nu-fuzz".

Dan Moses of the Dynotones rocked one at a recent gig w my preamp pedal and I thought it was on the mark.. It cut through the band and was snarly, bratty but still musical. I'd like to convince him to use my version but I know he plays Hallmark guitars and the hallmark Fuzzrite is par for the course so I'll just be happy the Dynotones use my preamp and my tremelo.

that's what it looks like without the goop yeah guy removed all the goop and that's it looks but if you close it's wired like the original silicone fuzzrite so there you have it.....

I've got a Mosrite Fuzzrite and a Sanner Fuzzrite that I like but my favorite Fuzzrite sound comes from the Mosrite Award Amp built-in Fuzzrite (sound samples at the link)

I recently got the Catalinbread Merkin Fuzz, it sounded great on youtube, it does sound great in person, but it's very very very loud.

It as two knobs, Volume and Texture, but they both act as gain/volume in a way. It is only playable when one of these are at 1/10 and the other up to 6/10 or so. Above these settings, it gets really loud. But with the knob at 1/10 it sounds weak, like a tube amp at 1/10.

We are playing really loud in our gigs but this pedal's volume is way over the top.

Any similar experiences?

Do you think it'll be possible to mod it in some way to get a volume cut?

I have one of the first 200 Mosrite Fuzzrite with Germanium transistors, and it very cool! It can sound like a blaring sax with the right amount of love and tenderness...

Between a Merkin diy and a fuzzrite diy,i kept the fuzzrite(i prefer it cause it screaming ,somes sound you don t have on Merkin even if it sound Good)
But the Merlin as i remember wasn t too loud ;but i haven t try a real, you have the sound of the vids only as i rememèber and is less interresting than the fuzzrite

I have a Maestro (Gibson) and a Fuzzrite. They each sound distinctive but I'd give the edge to the Fuzzrite. At times, that single pen light battery powered Maestro (with a positive ground??!!) can get thin pretty quick.
The Fuzzrite is a bit more robust with a regular 9 volt.
I also remember these gadgets would "freeze up" in cold weather. I found this out the hard way in the middle of February placing them on a cold basement floor at my friend's house.

Bought this when it came out. Nice pedal for the price but it didn't stand a chance in the practice room against the band volume (we're not loud, but still...). It's a bit anemic and lacks low end a lot! Wish it had a tone knob.

The Hicadoolas

I use the Merkin. I haven't had a problem with volume but have had an issue at a number of venues with it picking up radio stations. I haven't tried any others.

some have been asking me about transistors diy fuzzrite i suggested the nte85 or the 2n3704 are there even better ones because getting tz82's is next to impossible .........

The Ashbass Fuzzbrites haven't been available for some time. I know he sells through Ebay, but I haven't seen any new from him in almost a year.
