Junior Brown is the best! I've seen him twice - both times he played a bunch of surf tunes - and it was great! I still imitate his version of Penetration every time I play it - He only supports my idea that surf and rockabilly and country (real country, no the new stuff) are separated by only a few degrees. Here's my Junior Brown story - the first time I saw him was a a club called the Soiled Dove here in Denver during the stock Show - it was packed. - this was in 1995? anyway - after the opening band - i went to the restroom, and while i was washing my hands, I hear over the PA, "Ladies and Gentleman - JUNIOR BROWN!!!!!" I ran out of the bathroom, and i stood in the aisle and stood on my tip toes to see Junior. right then, i feel a hand on my back, and a low LOW voice says " Excuse me son..." I was standing in the aisle from the backstage area and, it was Junior brown himself pushing me aside. He then blew the crowd and me away with his guitar - He's unbelievable! Junior has been to Atlanta several times, and Eddie and I have become big fans. On that video, check out Junior's wife Tanya Rae's rhythm guitar playing...that's the way it is supposed to be done. She is like a freakin' metronome on stage. —Jack Booth The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005) |

Junior Brown is an absolutely phenomenal guitar player. First time I ever saw him was in Austin on a Wed. night. I was in a kinda down mood so I decided to stop in Antones and get a dose of blues. Billboard outside said "Jr Brown tonight" sounded like a good name for a blues player so I paid my 5 bucks and went in. There were maybe 10 people at best in the club that night so I got right up by the stage. I saw this Roy Rogers/ Howdy Doody looking guy on stage preping for the show. He had the strangest lap steel/ telecaster hybrib guitar I had ever seen. I remember thinking to myself there is only 10 people here because it was amatuer night for the entertainment and I had just wasted 5 bucks cover. Once he started playing though, I realized this guy is absolutely no amatuer. I NEVER miss a chance to see this guy. On top of his playing, he has a pretty tongue in cheek song writing style thats a kick too. —2012-2013: FILTHY POLAROIDS Last edited: Apr 25, 2007 09:11:04 |

I've mentioned Jr. before here on 101. The guy rocks. I happen to be a big fan of steel guitars and when Jr. gets serious with that steel....damn, what a sound. He always seems to use two silver face Twin Reverbs with JBL's. We had a discussion about the aplicability of the Tele for surf music. Well Mr Brown has it dialed in....ed —Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps? |

Too bad Brian Wilson was not there. I wonder what was wrong with him that week. —"as he stepped into the stealthy night air... little did he know the fire escape was not there" https://www.facebook.com/reluctantaquanauts/ |

Wow. That was awesome, that Junior Brown medley has been mentioned several times but had never heard it, let alone seen it. Thanks for posting! —Surf in Seattle? |

Junior seems to be a good sport. This guy just barges on the stage. |

I saw Junior Brown last night for the first time. Holy cow! He is awesome! What a mind blowing guitar player and that voice! He was playing 3 piece (no wife/rhythm guitar) and the bass player was playing a guitar instead of a stand-up and I couldn't believe the drummer either - just a snare and a cymbal. What a pro and a legend! And he did do his surf melody...... -outsides- |

That actually is not a Telecaster. It's a Bullet (cheap!) with Mustang pickups. Guitar Player once covered his gear. He used to be a regular on the David Letterman show and always amazed. |

I have a Supro 6 string lap steel laying around here somewhere. I started out playing steel guitar as a kid. —2012-2013: FILTHY POLAROIDS |
