This is a pretty cool article about Duane Eddy's guitar playing - and let's not forget that Mr. Eddy was Eddie Bertrand's biggest influence and favorite guitarist, as well as being a major force in inspiring many other first-wave surf bands, who often covered (or stole!) his songs (see the Lively Ones, the Surfaris, etc.)
Enjoy!

Ivan,
Cool article.. But I more or less figured out D.E.'s style years ago. The article kind of confirms what I hacked and slogged over before tabs, youtube and books.. So, over the years, I got a DE 6120 (or two), put on the heaviest strings my fingers could handle, got a few Magnatone amps along the way, and worked out the melodies and chords.
Things get very simplified when you can eliminate half of the guitar's strings and play on the bass strings.
One of the nicest compliments I got from Bob Spalding last year (at the Ventures East Coast Festival) was his telling me that Duane Eddy would absolutely love my Magnatone amp. That flood from a hurricane a few years back kind of wasted a lot of DE's equipment.
Another thing that helps getting De's sound - find a really good "throaty" sax player. Keys for background ambience doesn't hurt, either.
