Permalink Southern California Record Store Recommendations

New Topic

I'll be visiting southern California next week and am looking for some recommendations on record stores to browse between Long Beach and Laguna Beach. While a specific focus is vinyl surf music, I'm open to any cool stores that members enjoy supporting. I'd also appreciate any recommendations on local contemporary surf bands {vinyl or cd} and stores that may have 1960's original surf concert/movie posters.

Thanks, in advance, for any information!!!

Not sure about Long Beach or Laguna but take a short 45min drive north to Hollywood and go to AMOEBA RECORDS! 6400 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028 (323) 245-6400 www.amoeba.com You won't regret it!

BOSS FINK "R.P.M." available now from DOUBLE CROWN RECORDS!
www.facebook.com/BossFink
www.doublecrownrecords.com

This Sunday is the Buena Park record show.
The following Sunday is the monthly big
Flea market thingy at Pasadena city college.
Haven't been to that in a long time.
There are no record stores in
OC that I know of Sad

It is hard to top Amoeba Records.

In Costa Mesa/Newport Beach in an ordinary looking strip center on Newport Blvd just North of 17th Street is Second Spin. It has both new and used cds and some vinyl.

If you only have time for one shop in The OC, you need to go to Laguna Beach for Sound Spectrum Records. It has been there for decades. You will say WOW when you arrive. Its on Pacific Coast Highway well south of Main Beach. Best landmark is Jack In The Box across the street. While in Laguna Beach you must stop at The Guitar Shoppe at the North end of town. Closed Sunday. Nice collection of acoustic guitars, electric side is heavy on Fender guitars and amps. From time to time touring artists drop in to check out what's on the wall. Best feature is it is one block from the ocean. Take coins for parking Laguna take no prisoners on parking meters.

Happy Sunsets!

You are coming the weekend of Aug. 2nd/3rd?
Ugh!
You are gonna miss the surf convention
Sat. aug. 9th.
http://surfguitar101.com/forums/topic/23197/

Tons of surf vinyl in the vending room.
Change the weekend date if you can.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

This might me a Hidden Treasure, but while on Vacation to Los Angeles,
from Hawaii, (I know, I NEVER heard of that...) I visited my hometown of Pasadena, and was surprised to see one of our original Record Stores, still open and selling Vinyl's and 45's. They have been there since the 1960's.
My Junior High was down the street, and it was across the street from Wardy's Surfboards back in 1961, '62, '63, '64.
Dang, I wuz a young'un back then!
I'm sure he knows his business, but there still might be some gems to be found. It's only a few blocks away from PCC, mentioned earlier for it's swap meet.
It's called Canterbury Records. it's on the North Side of Colorado Boulevard, a block west of Lake Avenue. Try and not get engaged in a Street Race with any Old Ladies.....You'll lose.

Aloha,
Kim

BIG THANKS to all above who replied to my post!!!

I know my timing sucks with the convention a few days after I return to Boulder. Dang!!! I may have to just turn around and come back {or leave a pile of cash with Jeff, BigTikiDude, to hook me up with some surf vinyl from the vending room - half kidding and half serious if we could meet}

While I am flying in from Colorado, I am going to travel by bicycle. So despite exactly the suggestions for which I am looking, Amoeba, Canterbury, and the PCC market are going to be "out of cycling range". Second Spin and Sound Spectrum should be very doable. I've also since the post heard about Factory Records in Costa Mesa and Dizzy On Vinyl in Long Beach.

If anyone has other favorites, then I'm still all ears!

THANKS AGAIN to all above; much appreciated!!! - Paul

If traveling by bicycle, I think all the LA Metro and OC buses have racks for 2 bikes. So If you can figure out the bus routes, that's a feasible (and relaxing) way to get around LA without a car.

TKO records in Huntington Beach, corner of
Brookhurst n Hamilton (way back in the corner)
has 2 Dick Dale LPs in stock.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Fingerprints records in long beach has a
Volcanos- Finish Line Fever LP in stock.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Excellent point re: Metro and buses; I'll see where they take me.

I've added TKO and Fingerprints to the list. They should be pretty easy by bicycle.

THANKS, Paul

A few not mentioned yet:

Pepperland (Orange)
Mr. C's (Orange)
Poohbah (Pasadena)
Freakbeat (Sherman Oaks)
Vacation Vinyl (Silver Lake)
Mono Records (Silver Lake)
Penny Lane (Pasadena)

Mono usually has a really good surf selection. Nothing beats Amoeba, though.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Also a fairly good store,
Lou's in Encinitas.

But I dunno if you are getting down that way.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Hey folks, remember the OP is traveling on a bicycle and needs locations between Long Beach and Laguna Beach.

Happy Sunsets!

Once again, I truly appreciate the responses! I'd say Pepperland and Mr. C's are doable; maybe Lou's if I really get ambitious.

I'll have to report back on my impressions and all my finds.

THANKS, Paul

Check out Lovell's Records in Whittier (which is about 18 miles S.E. of Downtown Los Angeles). They've been there for decades and have a huge used vinyl and CD section (it's also the same record store where I bought my first surf music album with I was about 14 or 15).

Ok, I am back from the southern California, visit record stores by bicycle for surf music, trip. The quick list that I hit = Mr. C's (Orange); Fingerprints (Long Beach); Bagatelle (Long Beach); Third Eye (Long Beach); Dizzy's (Long Beach); Factory (Costa Mesa); TKO (Huntington Beach); and Port Of Sound (Costa Mesa)....and some others that I'm probably forgetting right now {and then all the ones for which I wish I had had time). While the timing sucked re: the upcoming convention, I did get to Huntington twice to catch the U.S. Open Surf Championships....definitely easier to park a bicycle than a car those days.

Some finds = Jerry Cole; Impacts; Surf Stompers; Sentinals; Challengers; Volcanos; Rhythm Rockers; Jon & The Nightriders; Phantom Surfers; Dave Allan & The Arrows; and more (I'll follow up when delivered/they arrive)

Thanks again for all the help!!

Paul

Stay away from The Record Collector on Melrose in Los Angeles. The records in there are WAY OVERPRICED.

Hey Brian:

Yes, super stoked about the adds to the collection. It seems like I found at least one or two of interest in each store. The prices varied significantly {some overpriced, some under valued imho and knowing what I know}. All in all, a very fun way to see the beach cities and explore the record store territory.

Paul

p.s. playing Ronnie & The Pomona Casuals right now "Everybody Jerk" (Donna label)....bought at Bagatelle along with a couple Jerry Cole's.
