Hey guys,

I've been working a lot the last few weeks on learning how to record using a Mac, DAWs, use MIDI, and mixing/mastering. The goal was to learn as much as I can so The Out of Limits can work on recordings this summer. When I started this song it wasn't a song, I just made it up as I was going along learning the various programs but I am kind of proud with the way it turned out despite my ham-fisted bass playing. I'd love some feedback on it, especially if you hear things that need improvement with regard to mastering or anything else.

very cool ! I like them both, however I felt on The Girl From Artemis Corona, the delay and reverb together on the lead guitar, muddied up the melody a bit. This may have been what you were going for. Great work for the 1st couple of tunes out of the box. Nice Cool

Thanks! The Girl from Artemis Corona was literally written as I learned how to use my new system. It started with the drum track, added a rhythm guitar, then some lead, and so on until it became a bit much and I ended up going back and re-doing the drums, lead and bass. So it evolved as I learned the various programs. I used reverb and delay on that song because I generally use both on my pedal board and I was just trying to "replicate" my live sound. However, with Aimpoint, the combination of delay and reverb was way too much so I ended up dropping the delay. So it wasn't really the sound I was going for, I was just experimenting.

I would get rid of cymbals in intro for
Escape From Tharsis , drummer can't play toms with both hands and the cymbal at the same time, besides it actually feels wrong. Other than that I hear progress from first to second to third. For example, the first one had all those strings, voices and other MIDI stuff...which in my view is unnecessary for the style of music you're trying to make, but can understand because at first it's hard to resist all those 'goodies' that come with DAW. The good thing is that it seams that you got over it pretty fast considering that you didn't use those on later songs. Keep on, I think you are heading somewhere. Just my 5 cents.

Not surf but you might like it:

Thanks Don! The first song was just a test run, really. I wanted to learn how to use all of those plugins. I agree that it was overkill but it was just a part of the learning process.

Song 4. Wrote and recorded this one yesterday. Our drummer is a former Metal drummer and was telling me that he missed it sometimes so I wrote this for him. http://www.reverbnation.com/sevenmilespersecond/song/21116425-the-trouble-with-tremolos
