It's been a while since I've posted here, but I need some input from fellow surf guitar players/fans. I'm a long-time Strat player, but I'm looking for something a little different sound-wise. My latest guitar build I'm planning, I'm considering a semi hollow body. I've got some P-90's which are good, but don't quite thrill me, I've got a Danny Gatton Tele bridge pickup (I forgot who made 'em) which might go in it, I'm considering some DeArmond type single coils, but then thought about the Burns Tri-Sonic style pickups.
I've had no first hand experience with Tri-Sonics – I'm looking for something mellower than a Strat single coil, but still has clarity. What are the general sound characteristics of Tri-Sonics? I haven't found a good sound sample yet.

I love the sound of tri-sonics. Any info on these would be appreciated. Here are some cool vids I have collected about them. I would think these would be kinda cool in surf music and plan to build a guitar with these in it.
Thee O Sees not a surf band but love the sound.
Hope this helps

Awesome stuff. It just occured to me that the Shadows used to play Burns guitars and tri-sonics are in those brand. So, maybe the sound from the Shadows at some point?

I bought a set of Burns Brian May Trisonics when they first came out. I like them because they have good output and a nice single-coil sound but they don't sound like Stratocaster pickups. That's what I was looking for since I already have enough Stratocasters! But the output falls off on the outer E strings, which is really annoying. I can use the guitar for chords and it isn't so noticeable, though.
Mine is an early set that I bought at the NAMM show. The later Brian May pickups were stamped 'Brian May' but mine just say Tri-Sonic on the covers. Maybe the later pickups fixed the balance problem.
