I too really dig his version of "Night Owl" but think his best vocals were yet to come; songs like "Hot Rod Alley", "Blond in the 406" and "My X-KE" a couple of years later.

Oooh, yeah, and "Grudge Run" kills! Dick had a killer growl back in the '60's that seems to have totally abandoned him by the 70's. Maybe 'cause he quit smoking... |

So I have finally listened to this carefully and read the great liner notes. I've heard these songs before but it really does sound historic listening to it all together. The liner notes are very interesting. I think this is the first time I have actually read in print that Jimi Hendrix went backstage and learned licks for DD. It has always been an apocryphal story spread by word of mouth on email lists. Is there any truth to it? Was Jimi actually in California at that time? When did he get out of the paratroopers? I also smiled at the whole tribal rhythms and fertility dances bit...that's classic DD. A nice tribute to his dad in the credits. I'm also not so sure about the "no reverb" thing on some of the songs...some of them do sound splashy. Anyway, this is great that SunDazed is re-releasing this material finally. I will definitely be picking up all of these releases. Great job! —Site dude - S3 Agent #202 "It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea |

Watch for 4 more Reissues coming out in May while Dick is on his Northeastern tour. Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum will host a meet, greet and signing reception TBA when he returns home. —I'm a lover not a fighter, a hugger not a handshaker and I take friendships very seriously...Love the life you live, live the life you love. |
