I sold our previous practice kit to a very good old friend who has never played (he's a bass and guitar player) so we're exchanging videos of our drumming progress but since I've had very little time to put into it over the last few months I still suck, LOL.

The press roll or multiple bounce roll is one of the more difficult rolls to learn as I've been working on it for over 58 years. On Vic Firths' drum stick site, Dr. John Wooton does and excellent job of explaining and demonstrating the roll. Additionally the other 39 rudiments are demonstrated, if you want to add more to your vocabulary. On brushes, Ed Thigpen and Clayton Cameron are masters-YouTube. Hope that helps and have fun.

Hi all! My name is Mark and I'm a Chicago-area surf drummer who's been lurking a bit here. First off, AMAZING site and forum. I love this place. I've been reading and learning so much here -- incredible.

This is a wonderful post. In my humble opinion, the guitar is the hero of pretty much every instro surf song, and the drums, when played well, should not only keep tempo, but add color, excitement and texture to what the guitar(s) are doing. I personally like to keep the groove, play with passion and add fills when a songs calls for it. Making everything too busy takes away from what this genre is about, IMO.

Dynamics are key -- underscoring the "verse" sections of the song, accenting solos and then going full-on when the song builds, crescendos, etc. And I'm in agreement with leading with the ride and using the high-hat sparingly. If I do go to the HH, I personally like it splashy for a fuller, more garage-y type sound.

As for tone, I love when drums sound big, warm and open. This is subjective and just my personal ear, but when toms are overly muffled, snares are tensioned too tightly, etc, I feel that the drums lose their "oomph" and the foundation of the song can sound shallower or weaker as a result.

I've had the fortune of owning and playing multiple kits through my life. I've had a '64 Ludwig kit, a '65 Slingerland and a 60's-era MIJ stencil kit by the brand "Majestic Deluxe." I've owned and played new kits from Gretsch, Ultraphonic (a WI-based custom company) and am now playing on Tama Starclassic Performers. My two cents: With the right tuning, pretty much any drum set can be made to sound good. It's all subjective to what works best for you.

To get the tone I like, I'm a big fan of Remo Skyntones, Remo Fiberskyns, Remo Vintage Ambassadors and Aquarian Modern vintage heads to get that warmer, fuller vintage tone. I use coated heads on the tops and bottoms of all the toms, and personally don't use moon gels to muffle anything.

Whether snare drums are wood or metal, I personally like mine open and "ringy," so they reverberate. My fav snare sound in the world is on Bill Haley's original 1954 version of Rock Around the Clock. It's like a cannon going off!! Probably like a lot of surf drummers out there, my litmus test for whether my snare is sounding good and capturing the right vibe is mentally playing the "Walk Don't Run" intro in my head. Great sounding snare that can't be beat!

So anyway, thanks again for creating this post and letting me share my two cents. Nice to "meet" all of you and I'm looking forward to slinking out of the shadows and contributing more, haha!

Attached is a pic of my current kit. It's a Tama Starclassic Performer w/22" bass drum in Shattered Turquoise Sparkle. It's a modern kit, but I just love the surfy finish and have it sounding nice n' vintage with some of the head and tuning combinations I mentioned above. Cymbals are a Dream crash/ride and high-hat -- simple, lean n' mean. Enjoy!
