Permalink Which new pickups for my Squier JMJM?

New Topic

Hello all,
I picked up a Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster a while back. While I actually don't mind the pickups that are in it, they don't fit what I want the guitar to sound like. I'm looking to get a more traditional JM sound.

While I'd love to be able to throw down for a set of Novaks or Lollars, they are our of my budget. I can justify paying the extra little bit for a set of Duncan Antiquities. Are they worth it over the AVRI or Duncan Vintage models? What are peoples opinions on the 1 vs 2?

Thanks in advance.

I have Duncan Vintage in my CIJ Jazzmaster and they sound fantastic. Don't take my word for it. They're on these songs by the Space Cossacks, being played by Ivan on the LPs using this exact same guitar.

Interstellar Stomp:
Black Sand, The Spy Satellite, Gunmetal Express, parts of Moroccan Adventures

Tsar Wars:
Tsunami Tsurprise, The Defector, Fiesta Del Cossacapulco

I find the Duncan Vintage pickups to be very balanced and slightly creamy, or less brilliant than the Antiquities; more 1958 and less 1965, if you will. I unequivocally love the sound of the Duncan Vintage pickups in this guitar. But if you like more brilliance, the Antiquities may better suit you.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

If you're budget is an issue. The 65 reissues sound great. You can find them for about 100 bucks and covers are included.

I have antiquity 1s in my sqjmjm and love it. I completely rewired it too. The pots had a different value so it was choking the antiquities a little. Sounds freaking amazing now though!

What don't you like about the j mascis pickups?

Yeah, my LGS said they can get the AVRI set for $100, the Duncan Vinyage, Hot and QP sets for $115, and Antiquity 1 or 2 sets for $135. All are in my price range.

Horax, the Mascis pickups are almost P90s. I already have other guitars to cover P90 sounds. I want a little more of that hi-fi jazzmaster sound, not a big hot mid hump.

I found a really awesome post on the offset guitar forum comparing most of the pickup options out there. It's definitely down to the AVRIs or the Antiquity 2s. For what ends up being about $17 a pickup, I'm not going to let price decide. I'll have to give all the clips a good thorough listen with my studio headphones when I have a little more time.

Having never tried anything Seymour Duncan I can't judge but the AVRI's really are very good.

I compared the squier VM JM and the JMJM before I bought. I prefered the brightness of the VM JM but bought the JMJM for the neck which is closer to my favorite, 62 vintage neck. The masics was much heavier I assume due to different wood used.
I figured I could change pickups easier than necks. Maybe not IDK. I was wondering about pickup and wiring changes too, thanks.

Neck changes and pickup changes can be about the same. Just depends which you are more comfortable. The JMJM and the VM are both supposed to be Basswood bodies. I definitely prefer the neck on the JMJM too. My tastes on replacement necks are expensive. If I had gone that route I'd have been dropping a neck that cost double or more what the guitar cost me onto it.

As for wiring, mine all specs out properly. I'll probably still put new pots and caps in when I change pickups. When I changed the guard everything looked neat and clean, and the values measured correctly.

Are there any updates on the JMJM changes?

You might want to have a look at the Guitar Fetish website. I've bought 3 different sets and every single one was spot on.

Frank
