What a great surf show we had in NorCal last night! The Pyronauts opened for the Duo-Tones at Constable Jack's in Newcastle, which is apparently a blues club most of the time. Nobody missed blues music last night, I sure didn't.
The Pyronauts started the night in their usual fun, rocking style with songs from their latest CD. I love these guys, and so did the rest of the audience including Paul and Gil of the Duo-Tones who were grinning the whole time.

The Duo-Tones are monster players, and two of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet. They played two amazing sets.

Paul Johnson is a legend for good reason. His rythym playing is amazing, and that's not half the story. I asked him during a break if the Duo-Tones' songs were carefully arranged. His paraphrased answer: not really, they just happened that way. These guys are just two very talented musicians whose style fit together perfectly.

Watching Gil Orr play is a lesson in econony of motion. I couldn't figure out how that much sound was coming out; it _looked _effortless. What a class act, too.

And one more reason they sound so good: I lent Paul my very proud '62 Bassman for their tour. Looks cool in the pix, thanks for posting!

I'll tell you what: it was an honor to open for the guys and get to spend some time with Paul and Gil. Totally down to earth guys who play the music becuase it makes them happy and they have fun doing it. Usually when I play in front of someone that I admire I end up not playing to the best of my ability, but with Paul and Gil it was different. They set us at ease and allowed us to do what we do!
Thanks to Don and Lori for taking the great pictures!

Paul and Gil are the Greatest guys ever, so cool and mellow and relaxed.
I went to see them one time at a resturaunt, I got there early and Paul asked me to sit down and join them and chat awhile. I told him I didnt want to intrude. He said dont be silly just sit down. and dig in.
I admit that I like Hi energy surf better.
But they are true masters of playing what/how they do.
And they can rock out. Ocassionally they will get Dusty and Ron Eglit to play with them if they need a full band.
And Of course Gil plays with the Chantays and paul plays with the Surfairs in full rocking band mode.
Whats with the flying ladies in the 1st picture?
Nice Bass Breht.
And Paul, dude you gotta grow your hair back, you stick out now
