Thanks Noel! I'm using synthetic rubber bands that were made using original rubber band technology from the early 1960s and you can definitely tell the difference between the red and the blue rubber bands. No volume drop for me. —Matt "tha Kat" Lentz |

I don't notice any volume drop in that combination. Interesting. Check the output impedance. I do feel the need for a compressor on the way to the amp, though. The rounds are quite unforgiving, but are teaching me proper use of dynamics. |

Smooth doesn't exist, loose and tight do. You DO NOT want a loose spring(which creates that smooth people talk about). Having a loose spring limits the best feature of the Jag/Jazz trem, the fact that it travels upwards. Only going down on the trem doesn't really sound good if you are just wiggling the arm. Have the tight spring creates a tighter waver that just sounds awesome. You can also do that the Nels Cline thing I've ripped off! Also, the MBV thing reacts/sounds better/requires less hand movement. Vintage springs and the Mastery springs are tight for a reason. |

If I understand correctly, the problem the link posted above tries to solve is the upper part of the import brass thingummy catching in the spring's middle turns, which the AVRI doesn't do because of its tapered shape. By filing down the upper part only, it would cause the top to stay clear of the spring while the bottom part would still be snugly held by the end of the spring -- just like on an AVRI. What is that Nels Cline thing? Is it something like pulling the arm and letting it go so it oscillates at an audio frequency? Mustang vibratos are good for that – so good that you have to hold onto them to prevent them from oscillating the top strings when you pick hard. JakeDobner wrote: |

Not, not that but the tight spring facilitates that as well. What Nels did, is when playing high notes, you can substitute picking for just quickly(in up and down speed) giving the bar an up and down wiggle(don't dip too far down or up) It gives a ebow type effect. Pretty cool! You'll have to use a pick to reactivate the string, but while it is sustaining you get that great effect. |

I have a Squier VM Bass VI and these are my findings so far: I did the OSG "Cone Mod" to the spring stop and it makes a world of difference. Out of the box, my vibrato didn't have a solid home position. I could leave it anywhere within 1/4" inch span. The Cone Mod eliminated that. I bought the LaBella Nickel Plated Roundwound set from Bassstringsonline.com . It's like a totally different instrument after getting rid of the rubber bands that came with it. It's easier to tune with the new strings. Finally, I did a 180 degree flip with the bridge. It was a real PITA to intonate it, but I don't need to spend $112 on a Staytrem bridge either. The other mod I made to the bridge was I put some Elmers glue in the string height screws to keep them from vibrating loose. ...I'll report more as I find more.
