I was surprised to learn this fact while listening to a Bob Bogle interview. The same technique was used on Slaughter on tenth Avenue. They played it through an organ speaker to get the effect. I would love to see/hear this recreated live on stage.

Leslie effect? I had no idea! I've always particularly loathed that sound, which sounded to me like a bad synthesizer!

Makes sense to me now that you mention it. I like the sound myself

After listening closer, I noted some sax tones. Very cool! I never would've guessed.

I went and tried to emulate it with my Moog. Couldn't come as close as with guitar – Fox Tone Machine clone (octave fuzz) – Fulltone ChoralFlange.

I just remember listening to Mr Moto and thinking, "Really that sounds terrible. I wish they hadn't used that horrible cheesy organ tone. Everything else is great."
Hmm. OK, sorry - on Moto it's some kind of choral ah-ing. I think it does replace the sax in the Belairs' version. I do remember the other stuff from some point. It's all mixed up in my "mistakes the Ventures have made" file.

I would really like to dig into that file. I'm a die hard fan and have very few criticisms. But I do agree, the organ sound they featured in a bunch of songs was a bad choice.

Well, I suppose it's a fairly short list. And that "strange organ tone" was at the top.

Indeed it was a saxophone through a Leslie speaker. It was played by Steve Douglas. Usually it was used in conjunction with Leon Russell on the Hammond B3 organ who also played on many Ventures recording dates.
Their drummer (Mel Taylor) made an LP for Warner Bros. Records called "Mel Taylor & the Magics in Action" released in 1966. Although he used no Ventures on that LP, he used the talents of the "Wrecking Crew" & that sound was predominant on most all of the numbers on that album. (It's currently available on CD 0n their website www.theventures.com)
