Lately my band mates and I have really been listening to alot of surf-style tunes, and we really want to incorporate it into our style. So I was wondering if my gear is surf enough? Currently i have a 1965 fender mustang, '69 reissue mustang, and hopefully a cyclone II within the next month. My amp is a Peavey classic 50 running through a 2x12 cab with greenbacks.

Also please feel free to recommend some gear.

SG101! welcome to sg 101 shaggy Exclamation this is the place for surf music questions and talk. alot of people will tell you you got to have a showman amp and a reverb tank to play surf---if you got the money!! now i'm partial to peaveys and the mustangs are fine--don't really know about the cyclone II cause i've never messed with one. not sure about the greenbacks either for the same reason---i like the vintage 30's but whatever. alot more folks here will have differing opinions but that is why we're here! welcome aboard dude Exclamation peace

Hi Shaggy,

What you have is fine, especially when getting started or for someone not going into a full blown surf band. The question for you is what elements of surf are you thinking of incorporating into your sound? Is it the heavy reverb sound with the drip? (Drip is the plinky sound you hear typically while muting the strings and plucking at the same time e.g. the Astronauts). If so, then nothing short of a Fender stand alone outboard reverb unit will do. If not, then your built in reverb or a reverb pedal will work fine.

Do you want to do the double-picking like Dick Dale? Then you may consider getting thicker strings (.012-.013 typically, though some of us have gotten good results on thinner). The thicker strings provide more resistance to your pick giving more control which allows for more even sounding picking. Try it and you'll see what I mean. Also many of us favor flat-wound strings. They are a little darker and are silky smooth for all those surf glissandos Rock

Feel free to ask any questions you may have, or search the archive for more immediate results. Also post your band's info to our links page and the myspace thread currently taking place.

haha thanks for the welcoming and the replies!

Well seeing that i adore the reverb setting on my amp for my blues-funk stuff, i might buy the Fender '63 Fender outboard Reverb, and forget about buying a cyclone.

As for amps, what are some of the best choices? I have been checking the ebay and saw some showmans and bassmans that were in my price range. Any Recommendations?

And as for strings, i have never thought about flat-wound, but it seems like a idea. I might want to pickup a mim strat and asign that as my surf guitar and set it up for flat-wound 12's.

Oh and the sound i am looking for is that of Dick Dales on "lets go trippin" and "Nitro"

Also what happens if you stack reverbs?

Let's go trippin' and Nitro? Young Dick and Old Dick! You really like Mr. Dale! I had to word it that way because I might of gotten in trouble again if I used his first name Rolling Eyes

You got two mustangs, I would personally slap some heavy flats on the newer one and call it a day equipment wise. As long as your amp plays relatively clean at the volumes you need, you don't need any of the god-like big fender amps. If you do need more volume and clean tone, some of us... Errr... I mean some folks like the crate Powerblocks which are going for around a hundred on Ebay. No it's not a tube amp, but it's cheap, and with the gain turned down is clean at all volumes, and it can be hella loud! Throw a used Fender reverb in front of it, and for a grand total of about $400 plus a speaker cab, which you might enjoy building yourself, you'll have a fine surf tone. Don't mind the gear nazis who will trash the Powerblock. Would you worry what the Church Ladies say about your clothes? Don't worry about the Amp Ladies then either!

Anyway that would be the cheapest way for you to do some serious acoustic damage. Of course if you got the bucks, Get a Showman... Then the Guitar Ladies will come out, purse their lips and say "Oh Deary, you really want our savior to come back and see you playing THAT guitar through a showman... Apparently some of us prefer guitars designed post CBS... you know what CBS means don't you? Commissioned by SATAN!" Twisted Evil

shaggster:

firstly: welcome to SG101, the preeminent home of serious hardcore reverberation on the entire World Wide Web!

In regards to your inquiry, if you stack reverbs, your eyeballs will first sprout wicked heinous veinage and they will start to poke out of your cranium. In the end, ultimately, you'll end up looking like this dude:

as far as gear goes, it sounds like your setup will definately get you reverberating...one bit of advice, though...

if your trying to capture the ultra-Dickified sound of Mr. Dale, you might want to stick with some heavy guage roundwound strings (something like Rotosound should do the job)...Mr. DickDale is a devotee of the roundwoundsound. Since it seems that you have two surf guitars, I'd try one with heavy flatwounds and one with heavy round wounds and see which type of strings flips your switch. Try to learn Mr. Dale's "Surf Beat" and "Miserlou" and "the Wedge"'...be sure to get a handful of decent heavy picks and loosen up your picking hand, because you'll need to get your non-stop-machine-gun-staccato-pick-action attack in line...

good luck,

Welcome to the group, Shaggy! Cheers

I agree with the the advice given by the others who have responded.
If you want the serious "drip", buying a reverb tank will be your first
and highest priority. Contrary to the opinions of a few in this group,
IMHO there is indeed such a thing as too much reverb. Stacking reverb
on top of reverb tends to get real muddy to my ears.

I'm partial to blackface Fender tube amps. Not being a trad guy, I like
a little break-up, so I go for amps less powerful than the exalted
Showman or a Twin. I've got a '63 Deluxe (20watts) that just kills, and
a '65 Bassman (50 watts) Head for when more power is needed. A lot
of guys here would tell you that the Celestians have to go, in favor of
Webers, Jensens or JBL's. I guess what you need to ask is whether you
want the traditional sound, or want to go the more progressive route.
The Crate powerblock that BadAsh mentioned is a great alternative
that a lot of us have picked up on. I bought mine for a back-up, and
with a reverb tank, will get you a very creditable sound.

As far as your guitars go, the Mustangs should be fine for now. Guitars
of choice within the group are predominently Jaguars, Jazzmasters,
Strats, and Moserites.

Like Danny said, search the archives. There is a wealth of information
on this site.

Good luck!!!

Welcome shaggy

Yep, the stand alone reverb is the thing that is almost required for surf music. But I think the equiptment you already have should get you moving in the right direction. Play what you have, and learn the old surf music, and the new stuff also. When you find the sound you like the most, then buy the equiptment that creates the sound you want.

When you get the sound you want, than get stoked and hang six right to the download demo/music page and give us a mp3 sample. We love to hear other folks musical styles.
There are quite a few different styles here, even though it is all surf music.

another quick note about strings, since it's the obvious first step. Have a decent guitar tech enlarge the slots in the nut to accomodate the thicker strings. Then use plenty of graphite or lube of choice in the slots and string trees and bridge, to help stay in tune when using the trem.

I have a powerblock and I'm proud of it Exclamation Razz

go shaggy! welcome!

Ill echo everyone else, sicne you have two mustangs you could easily try flats on one and see if you care, but personallly I'd stick to rounds. Suits the mustang better, plus suits the DD sound better. Personally if I had two mustangs, I d string up one with whimpy 10's and one with 12's and Id feel I got all my bases coverd.

also that amp and greenbacks sound fine to me for that slightly overdriven sound. eventually you might want something else but Id wait untill I thoroughly ressearched the genre and the gear possibilties. (although you really cant go wrong with buying a powerblock Cool )

First thing Id do is get me a pair of pure nickel 012 roundwounds, and a bunch of different picks (delrin500, Dunlop ultex, dunlop gels and nylon)... that's a $15 investment, and trying those out will show you how big the sound difference is with a different pick (huge!) and take it from there.

btw, fwiw, I saw the infrareds play a cyclone 2 (I think) and it sounded pretty good but he had trem issues (tuning), and they're kind of pricy, Id consider a japanese jag or jazzmaster for that kind of money...

2 cents more, you'll soon have a dollar's worth of 'advice' Very Happy !

Thanks everybody!! I decided to to but some round-wound 12's on my '69 reissue competition mustang, and save up for a used outboard reverb and possibly a strat for the future. And if i ever stumble across a powerblock for dirt cheap, i just might, might buy it.

As for uniform, i have worn lo top converse and surf shirts for all my life.

Once again thanks to everybody who contributed.

Hi Shaggy, welcome aboard. Your set up is a great start. Although I am a devoted fan of Electro Voice speakers your greenbacks will do just fine. WoodyJ snarfed my last pair and dropped them in his original (he got it new in 66) Fender Bandmaster amp and it Kills. I used them in my Fender Deluxe amps and they rocked. I use a Peavey Classic 50 4-10 for practice jaming at a friend's house and it is pretty smooth. You will finally get the bug and go trad, most of us just bit the bullet and utimately bought the real thing. There is even a rumor that Ivan P is sporting a Jaguar now. There is no rush. Zero in on an outboard tank and start collecting.....it's really habit forming.
We have a name for it "AMIS" (acquired musical instrument syndrome)......ed

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

the other guitar player in my band uses my Peavey Delta Blues which is practically the same amp as the Classic series except with a tremolo circuit. It does a great job in the band and keep up with my Twin Reverb pretty well (except in the volume department). Your definetly making a good choice with the outboard tank, I just need to talk my bands other guitar player in to investing in one... and maybe an amp... and maybe his own guitar too...
