Permalink What was the first instro surf band in 70's

New Topic

In 1975 Rhino released The Savage Surf by The Winos.
This record is very primitive garage surf instro after 60's surf music era.
After this single they changed band name as The Low Numbers.
It's very interesting Rhino released such surf music.

I'm checking many records after 70's but this seems to be the first one playing rough punish style (sounds like Surf Beat by Dick Dale)

How do you think the origin of after 70's garage surf music?

GNP/Crescendo released a Dick Dale LP in '76 - Greatest Hits:

image

Tracklist:
01. Misirlou
02. Surf Beat
03. Sloop John B
04. King Of The Surf Guitar
05. The Wedge
06. Those Memories Of You
07. Let's Go Trippin'
08. The Victor
09. Peppermint Man
10. Get Back The Feelin'
11. Peter Gunn 1976

These were mostly new recordings, not the originals from the '60s. You can find them all on this GNP-Crescendo CD:

These rerecordings are in general pretty cool, I like them a lot. They were usually different enough from the originals that it's interesting to hear them. And Dick was playing really well at that point. So, that was another case of a rare '70s surf release.

Do you have an audio sample of the Savage Surf?
It would be cool to hear it. It seems like the rest of the Winos material was vocal.

This record gave me a great influence.
At that time I loved Deep Purple, but when I heard this, wilder than deep purple. Not Hard rock, harder rock.

The Blues and Soul bands of the 60's kicked surf up a notch. A little more funk and grit in the guitar sound. And not every player could have a Showman with JBL's. Alamo, Supro, Silvertone amps would distort at volume. Garage bands could afford a SIlvertone. Just a thought.

As I know and think…
Ramones helped some to raise again Surf Music. as popular music.
Also around 1975, The Beach Boys' family back to origin, Buruce Johnston, Jan & Dean and Papa Doo Run Run. But most of them were Surf vocal. Real Surf instrumental music was rebuilt by John Blair's Discography and Bob Dally's research for 60's original band. Why I began The El Caminos, because of Jon & The Night Riders and The Surf raiders.

That's my favorite version of Misirlou, the extended intro is really great.

Not quite 70s, but the Evasions (Skid Roper et al.) were 1980.

The LP jacket says 1982, I notice.

Just found this thread! I am from the first wave era, so as the genre of surf waned, I always listened for new stuff. In 1972 I was living in Hermosa Beach. A great Surf Film came through town called Five Summer Stories. It would come around yearly with new footage added. The soundtrack was recorded by a band from Laguna Beach named HONK. A lot of their songs were vocals, but there was one instrumental that was background for Jerry Garcia's surfing in Hawaii, called "Pipeline Sequence". It was refreshing to hear a new surf tune! Aloha, Kim in Kohala

"To do, is to be" Aristotle ~ "To be, is to do" Socrates ~ "Doobie, doobie- doo" Sinatra

I remember Rigan Clan, but it's a cover of the Bach Boys' Fun, Fun, Fun. Flash Cadillac had a cool version of Pipeline.
