I figured out a way to cheat and make it easier! I'll limit my choices to only albums that I own on cd or vinyl. It's still giving me a headache and I just started thinking about 3 minutes ago.

I've got one of those (the headache). I've got to re-rack & stack. The prohibitions in DA RULES kinda let out a couple of live albums that are among my favorites in a relatively small collection.

Niels, you need to define what a compilation is. Do you mean a compilation with multiple artists or a compilation on non-album tracks? To me, a compilation is a collection of non-album tracks. Squad Car, Nevermind the Bolsheviks, and Destroy all Astromen are all examples of compilations. And Two of them would have been on my list! Also, best ofs shouldn't count. So Bolsheviks and Plymouth Rock along with Fly Up and other Surf Coasters best ofs. Also, you gonna count live albums?

!. the penetrators 'locked and loaded'
2. jon and the nightriders 'moving target'
3. the space rangers 'ready to take off'
4. bambi molesters 'dumb loud hollow twang'
5. the atlantics 'flight of the surf guitar'
6. daikaiju 'phase II'
7. los straitjackets 'damas y caballeros'
8. pollo del mar 'the golden state'
9. the eliminators 'ultra sonic surf guitars'
10. insect surfers 'infra green'
this was tough, i kind of went through all my cd's and picked the ones i seem to play the most. i missed out on a lot of the 'second wave'.
i had pollo del mar's 'year of the rooster' but realized it broke some of the rules so i changed it to 'the golden state'

I've noticed a few people mentioned
Jon & the Nightriders,
Lets not forget the amazing Halibuts
and The Surf Raiders.
And and any other records from the late 80s
Such as The Untamed Youth and Phantom Surfers.
The surf revival didn't start with pulp fiction,
That just kicked it Into overdrive.

(for me) I thought the easiest and most honest way was to look at the albums I have returned to over and over again, then prioritise them. It would be very easy for me to rank "Los Coronas - Adios Sancho" as my number one, I'm playing the heck out of it but it has yet to stand the test of time. "Surf Coasters - Samurai Struck" gets my Number one even though I haven't played it for a year, I have played to destruction in the past though. It's all very well voting Jon and the Nightriders out of respect but if I don't play their record often then they shouldn't be on my list. Just my way of thinking - I'm an Jon Blair fan absolutely.

I consider an album a concept, a release with tracks all recorded more or less at the same time with the intention to release it as a new album.
(Re-issues with bonus tracks can be mentioned in your Top 10 but I will add those points to the original version of the specific album and will not make those re-issues seperate entries in the list).
With compilations that are not allowed to enter I am reffering to:
- Various Artist compilations.
- Single Artist compilations with Singles, B-sides, EP´s, rarities or outtakes recorded in different timeperiods of a band´s career.
Album with re-recordings of a set of tracks recorded during one new session would be able to enter the list as well as live albums as they were both recorded with the intention to release at that specific time.
So you are right, the following albums cannot enter the Album Top 101:
- Eddie And The Showmen – Squad Car
- The Space Cossacks – Never Mind The Bolsheviks: The Best Of...
- Satan's Pilgrims – Plymouth Rock - The Best Of
- Man or Astro-man? - Destroy all Astromen
and releases like:
- The Apemen - 7+ Inches Of Love
- Man or Astro-man? - What Remains Inside a Black Hole
- Man or Astro-man? - Beyond the Black Hole
- Lost Acapulco - Wild Surf From Mexico (a repackaged and renamed vinyl edition of Los Obligados Racing Team with 2 different tracks on it)
As for EP´s, the technical distinction between EP´s and Albums for music charts is different in various countries. I have decided to go with the following UK definition: "Any record with more than four distinct tracks or with a playing time of more than 25 minutes is classified as an album for sales-chart purposes."
So that also leaves room in the Album Top 101 for a lot of EP´s (like "Your Weight On The Moon" i.e.).
Obviously there will always be exceptions. In case of doubt people can always check a release in this thread and I will come to a verdict
