Permalink Best Delay Pedal?

New Topic
Goto Page: 1 2 3 Next

I'm not into pedals. Since 1982 my only pedal has been a tremolo foot switch. But used correctly and sparsely, delay is pretty frickin' cool (Can you say James Wilsey"?) Which one has some Mojo going on?

I can't play this thing! It's got no whammy bar!

Depending on budget the El Capistan is great, vintage ibanez AD9 has some mojo and I even like the line 6 echo park. Now if you has big case go Fulltone TTE. Actually there's tons of options you're just going to need to try some. I should mention the ones above have some mojo IMHO

The MXR Carbon Copy is a nice pedal. It's also simple, which I like. I like it better than a the Boss DD7.

Vintage Boss DM-2 is great but expensive. Discontinued Yamaha MagicStomp pedal has several nice delays.

It really depends on what kind of delay you want, the two basic styles are digital and analog

Digital gives you perfect clear repeats
Analog gives you decaying repeats

I keep both kinds on my board, a dd-3 and a memory toy

DD-3 is cool and cheap. I've had one for years, but recently have gone over to the dark side. Since I got my Eventide H9 the DD-3 has been sadly neglected.

EHX Classic Deluxe Memory Man (2000-2005 vintage) is my most used pedal and it has replaced my external Fender tank (I use the amps built in spring reverb if I need it). I think the best DMM is the one with the MN3005 bucket brigade chips for that analog delay sound and powered by an AC adapter.

However it's a sad fact these have gotten stupid expensive because they were discontinued in 2009. I have two of them because I like the sound so much and the memory chips are impossible to find.

These things are not what I'd call quality construction either. I've had to repair both of mine (replace compander IC's, and scratchy pots) but after that I socketed all the IC's. Easy fixes but both have worked for years now.

EHX came out with a Deluxe Memory Man DSP (digital signal processor) version but there's no comparison in sound.

Hello,

Seems like we had a long discussion on delay pedals a while back, You might want to read through that thread.

I use a Way Huge Aqua Puss delay.

Later,

If you like to keep things authentic and simple, I'd suggest the Catalinbread Belle Epoch.

It took a little while for me to get to know, but now it's a keeper. Definitely worth the price, and it's got a great reputation holding it's own against actual Echoplex units and similar high-end digital tape modellers like the Strymon El Capistan and Empress Tape Delay.

However... if you want things super-simple maybe try out an anlog delay. Personally I gave up on them, but I really liked the Ibanez AD9 out of all the ones I tried.

I'd go for the MXR Carbon Copy, it's nice and simple, has a lot of range and a neat modulation switch. It's a very sweet sound.

If you want bright repeats, the Carbon Copy with the mod switch is great.

If your going dark, the analog Ibanez/Maxon AD9 is the way to go.

The Boss RE-20 'space echo' is neat as well.

+2 on the Belle Epoch!
Pretty inexpensive, simple to use and the pre-amp sounds great!!

Does the Belle have a non artificial sound ?the Boss D9 I have sounds tin like and adds a metalicy reverb echo to my tone. I'd like one that just gives a warm slap back w/0 altering my all tube tone.Is the Belle that pedal ? Thanks guys!

No, in fact it's the most natural sounding pedal I've ever heard.

+1 on the RE-20 Space Echo!!! I used an Echoplex Ep-3 for years. Companies can model and simulate all they want, nothing sounds like one of those in a direct A-B comparison.

Ultimately, everyone has their own personal favourites and the best thing is to try as many different ones as you can. That way you can find the one that best works for you. Just like guitars, one model does not suit all... Yes

I have had good luck with my EHX Memory boy. I got that and a Holy Grail for 100 bucks. My accumulated tape delays do quite nicely too.

Maybe a Univox does surf...

Gotta side with Mel. My EP2 Echoplex stays in the studio, I do use a Visual Sounds H2O Liquid Chorus on my pedal board for the delay. (delay and chorus in 1 box)

Need to go play as many as you can get your ear on. I also have a Danecho and a Boss DM3, both sound great, but the H2O gives me a fatter tone.

Are you sure about that? The EHX website still lists die Deluxe Memory Man as available along with newer versions, that do feature tempo tapping but are still built from the same analog components.

I occasionally use an EHX Memory Toy, which is basically the totally stripped down version of the Memory Man. The reason why I actually need to have an analogue delay is that only with these you get these nice feedback sci fi sounds. Groovy

Some folks really use the Carbon Copy's mod switch? Wow, I totally disliked that sound. But the CC is still on my board and in use. I also own 2 Sitori Sonic Delays (Magnetic Repeater and Tapeworm). Really great sounding delays...I think I might switch to the Magnetic Repeater again.
And if you want to have something digital I'd recommend the ZOOM 508. Sweet digital delay with an excellent Shadows sound.
