If that makes any sense. Also: Marc Ribot played a bit of jazzed up surf when he came to Berlin a few years ago. His recordings with Los Cubanos Postizos may also be worth checking out. — Los Apollos - cinematic surf music trio (Berlin) "Postcards from the Scrapyard" Vol. 1, 2 & 3 NOW available on various platforms! The days before there played the Surfaris and the Bambi Molesters. We made some nice sightseeing with Jim Fuller, Paul Johnson, Dusty Watson and Ron Eglit. Good days! It was a festival with especially surf music in the center of Berlin! Marc Ribot is an INCREDIBLE guitarist!!! But normally he does not play surf music. The story behind why he played there: The organisators from the Wassermusik Festival asked Marc Ribot if he plays Surf Music? He said: "Yes, for sure, I play surf music." So he get this nice gig there! BUT I also heard from Marc Ribot that they turned the program a bit into some surf style music. Therefore the "Caravan" version here. Anyway, simoncoil mentioned Marc Ribot! This is senseful. M. Ribot has also collaboration with a portuguese band called Dead Combo. He likes guitars that are by jazz standards, poorly set up, so he has to struggle with them. That seems kind of surf to me, the preference for Jags and Jazzmasters with thick strings and high action over too easily-played Strats 'set up right'. Ribot makes a lot of the quirks of Fender and other guitars, physical things like fret-out and buzz. Now the other great jazz guitarist, Bill Frisell is doing something surfy with his 'Guitar in the Space Age' show currently touring with a 'surf' band. When a record comes out it will be a revelation. Many of the genre lines we post-moderns like to reify were fairly fluid when the sound of modernist guitar was being invented. Even Joe Pass played a Jazzmaster for a little while. — Squink Out! Top

I missed most of the festival out of my own stupidity and only was there on the second day (Boom Pam, Bambi Molesters and a screening of "Step into Liquid"). But this was long before I actually felt comfortable enough to talk to anybody actually involved in surf music (althoug I already played in a surfband for some years). I think I actually stood right behind you most of the concert. But I saw Ribot with his trio a few months ago, which mostly performs free jazz in the style of Albert Ayler. I liked it but never the less got a headache from it. It seems like only few of the man's projects ever get on a record. He also played on John Zorn's "Naked City" which has quite a few but very brief spy/surf moments thrown into the tunes. Pretty wild stuff! Considering Joe Pass: I actually used to run one of his solo concerts through an amp sim with a lot of spring reverb just to see what it would sound like.
