For those interested in paper & oil caps, StewMac just sent me this link:

Is that genuine snake oil in those caps? Smile

The effect of paper & oil caps is much debated, I put one in my Jaguar and I really can't hear any difference myself. I read that if the tone is set all the way bright the cap isn't even in the circuit, only as you roll back does the character of the cap come into play. I suspect many here never roll off their tone pot, keeping it bright. I did notice a big functional difference installing the RS 250K (or 290K) Super Pot for volume. I can now roll off the volume without losing brightness, instead of the tone becoming dead as soon as I rolled back a touch and I get the full sweep of the pot instead of the volume dropping out as soon as I roll back. I also heard a much more noticable and obvious difference using Dunlop Gel picks, they seem to get much more out of a string than other picks, although they do tend to break easier due to their more brittle material. You can hear the difference when you drop one on the floor.

Another simple adjustment that can have big benefits to surf tone: adjust pickup height. Sometimes setting neck PU flush with pickguard while setting bridge PU as high as possible without producing grinding noise works better for surf lead than bridge PU alone...but just sometimes.

The rationale is that the lower PU height at the neck gives it a smaller influence on the overall tone than the bridge PU.

So this adjustment would be useful for switch position 2 when the the wiring is rerouted? That sounds real interesting. Take some of the harshness away from using the bridge by itself. Maybe a fuller tone?

Oh you, you, that's what you are!

Someone mentioned picks as having an immediate, drastic effect on tone produced. I second that. Whole eras of sound style can be evoked by appropriate selection of pick.

Squink Out!

More cool stuff!!!

  • I have trouble throwing away used, worn guitar picks.
  • I have trouble throwing away rubber bands that I store over time from various buys
  • Nothing worse than having lost your last guitar pick
  • And most importantly, my guitar cables get all messy and tangled when I stack them or store them or put more than one of them in the guitar case's pocket.

So here's the solution to these 'problems': punch/burn a hole through a pick, pull a rubber band though it and then through itself, and use it as shown to hold the cables. It's very easy to secure and remove, it holds well enough, you don't care if you loose it, and you always have a few extra picks (albeit worn) close at hand!

To burn the hole whithout snapping the pick or damaging the rest of it, I used a metal tip that I heated with a soldering iron while pushing it through the pick.

By the way, another cool tip is to scrach an X or smtn on the pick with a pointy object so that it doesn't slip from your fingers (thanks Dimebag Darrell!)

Brilliant! Please show a picture of the rubberbandpick thingie holding a cord together.
Put them in a poly bag and sell them for 3 euro each plus tax.
