Permalink Yamaha guitars for sale on Japanese auction sites

New Topic

I've been looking for a certain brand and model surf guitar. It's the very elusive Yamaha SGV-800. While looking at some Japanese auction sites, I came across this beautiful Yamaha SG7AS, a 1996 re-issue of the first Yamaha guitar, the SG7.

Well, the buy it now price is $5,066 shipped. The guitar is practically untouched and is said to be "as new". The seller says only 500 were produced world-wide. Is there any way to confirm this without having to call Japan and speak to a factory rep? Also, I'm curious if anyone on this site has ever won a guitar on a Japanese auction site and had it shipped to the USA. Apparently, there are dozens of sweet Yamahas over there popping up left and right for auction.

I can't say anything about the guitar/model, but one thing I've learned (the hard way) is: don't buy guitars in this price range over the internet without the opportunity to play them before you pay! Just my 2 cents.

I simply cannot see purchasing one of these Yamaha guitars for this amount of money. I love the SGV series, but damn.

For 5 grand, you would have to want it real bad.. and it probably sounds as good as its $300.00-$500.00 SGV couterparts.
This reminds me of the $50,000.00 Mosrite bass that has popped up on EBAY over the last several years (with no takers). I think it's on EBAY now.
The sellers are based in Europe and, from personal correspondence, have themselves convinced of its "worth" - last one made by Moseley or some such poop.
I suggested that they also offer a glass of lemonade for $1,000,000.00 with the deal. Yeah, I know, what dope would pay a million bucks for a glass of lemonade. Well, you only need one buyer - could be the same sort of person with the acumen to buy a $50,000.00 bass that is worth $1500.00-$2,500.00 on a good day.

I own several modern yamahas sgv (2 sgv 300, 1 sgv 500, 1 sgv 700 and 1 sgv 800). I have imported from Japan the sgv 500 and the sgv 700 and I have been searching the Japanese market for a long, long time looking for yamahas (sg or sgv yamahas are hard to find even in Japan). Those yamahas sg7 are often sold between the 168.000 / 250.000 yen range, depending on the condition.

That guitar in the original post is a re-issue of a SG-5a. It's Yamaha's second original guitar. Original 60's models aren't very difficult to find, even in the US. I've owned 4 in the last few years. $700-1200 usually gets you a very nice one. The one in the OP is the Terry and the Blue Jeans re-issue, and that drives the price up. $5000 is stupid money. They aren't that good. Watch ebay, check "Yamaha SG" and some will surely pop up for way less money.

Exactly. I've even found Yamaha SG-7a's over here at guitar shows, and they seldom sell for more than 1500 bucks, and that's a mint one with original case.
