We played as a three-piece last week because our bassist was out of town and I switched to bass for most of the set. Not as fun for me, even though I play bass in every other band I've ever been in. Four or five years ago, a previous incarnation of The Spoils played as a trio, and I like the sound, but it's better with another guitar. Here's us doing Shockwave.

SOmetimeS I WISH we were a Trio....too many guitar players in my band. More work to teach to songs. More chances for no-shows at gigs.
Bummer... but hey! ;)

Would like to play in a trio but don't have time. Mostly it's just me and my recording gear/backing tracks.

For us, it is all based on what the audience thinks, and not whether another surf guitarist or dedicated surf music fan would like to hear a second guitar. Fortunately, every club or event where we (the Royal Aces) play has loved the band, and we keep getting asked back, so the trio approach is working great for us.

Anyone else here dig "The Ultras" as much as I do? Great 3-piece band IMHO...
Is it sludge or, is it surf? It's a shame that Professor Sludge (Eric Lenchner) has had issues with hearing loss...would love to have seen them play "live".

We've only recorded one surf song so far, and have a bunch of others started, but we are a 3 piece. I've actually only ever been in 3 piece bands my whole life. I love it! I play bass and I love the way it allows me to be more than just a rhythm player. I like to play melody on bass, so it allows me to step out sometimes.

My instro-rock combo - The Mystery Tramps - plays lots of surf tunes and other classic instrumental rock and pop stuff as well. We usually are a trio - guitar, keys and drums. Ricky, our keyboard player covers the bass with his left hand and still plays killer riffs and melodies with his right. Kinda best of both worlds. We do have a sax player, but due to business constraints he can't always make the gigs. I find having the keys very cool as we can do tunes like Telstar, Theme From The Good The Bad And The Ugly and Hideaway and they sound really full.
Since we are not strictly a surf band I don't really worry about having the surf tunes sound exactly like the original recordings. On our originals it really doesn't make any difference since they sound just like us anyway.

I can barely believe that they weren't mentioned so far (especially since I really like them a lot):
The Boardwalkers!!!
Does anybody know whether they are still active (on any level)?
Actually, when I see the fabulous video of Surfari / Angry Breed (see below) I somehow wonder, whether they didn't have any influence on Slacktone... Not the fuzz of course but the way, in which Dan Valentie manages to sound like two guitarists at certain moments.
Unfortunately they never recorded a full album, only a single and some tracks for compilations. And then there is this nice live recording done by ChromeOxide. He is listed as the "official taper" of the band, which means there should be some more recordings. Maybe somebody should try to talk them into a live album... (Didn't JP play bass for them at the convention a few years ago?)

Thanks for the info, Jeff!
I just did some further listening via the youtube stuff by this guys and the more I hear the more I like it. 'Icicles' for exampe is such a diverse song.
You (or anyboy else) don't happen to have that "Live at Mr. T's Bowl" CD by any accident? Any good? I would try to bother people (i.e. former bandmembers) then to get a copy. (That would beat ripping single youtube files ).

Check out the Shitones and the Mermen. I have recently found these guys and love the way they fill the sound out and play. Great example of a trio working well.
Playing in a trio allows all the players room to fill out the sound more and have to contribute more to the overall sound.

My trio SandBlast! It has pluses and minuses, but mostly pluses. I don't know that you have to think more than if you were playing in a quartet or quintet, but you do have to think differently.
Don't have any decent live vids, but this is us live in the studio.
