Surf punk, not exactly. Surf influenced, sure. One of my all time favorite punk bands. East Bay Ray did have a surf band in the 90's called 'Jumbo Shrimp'. I never really got to hear them though. I bet Ferenc remembers them. Ferenc? Oh, btw: Danny Snyder I am now playing trumpet with Prince Buster tribute band 'Balzac' Playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta Formerly a guitarist in The TomorrowMen and Meshugga Beach Party Latest surf project - Now That's What I Call SURF |

Daed Kennedys Rule! Any Mojo Nixon fans here? The Prairie Home Invasion album that he and Jello Biafra did was a great record! But yes, Ive always thought they had a 'surf' vibe, I believe in an earlier thread someone commented that East Bay Ray claimed to not be influenced by surf music..... |

Yeah, East Bay Ray claimed that he wasn't influenced by surf. He said it was just because he grew up in California. I wish I could get that jumbo shrimp cd. Klaus was also on that cd. But I think that they have some songs I would consider surf punk. Particularily Moon over Marin. —I am super sweet |

that was me, i dont know where i read it, or even if its true, but thats what some source said. it could be that east bay ray was being sarcastic, thats a possibility. — |

I saw Jello sing a few songs with MOAM a while back...that was pretty cool. |

He says, 'I was never consciously influenced by surf' meaning (to me) he never tried to sound surfy. It doesnt mean he isnt or is though... |

The interview wherein EBR claimed surf was not an influence was Guitar Player sometime last year. At that time, I was working with Klaus Flouride, who told me that Ray was just trying to get a little more acknowledgement for his own contributions to the guitar, and was kind of sick of talking about surf music. Ray told me a years ago that his first bands were surf bands. I think a lot of DK songs are surf influenced in both style and structure. Pollo has covered "Moon Over Marin" for years, and I heard a South American band do an ultra trad version of it-- very good! Buy Endless Drummer @ Bandcamp |

Surf or not, Dead Kennedys had some awesome material. I've got 'Bedtime For Democracy' on right now. |

I know some dont like tribute cds, but I'd love to see a whole surf tribute to the DK's like the Clash one. Jeff(bigtikidude) —Jeff(bigtikidude) |

I can't remember which DK's bootleg it's on (Skateboard Party, maybe?), but there's one where EBR just plain goes off on "Police Truck." It's pretty great.
The Tormentos? I like their cover, but the PDM version slays it. -Warren —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

the heart eaters do moon over marin as well. we dont really change it too much, just a little more fast picking, and thats it. we use it for the last song because very few of our original songs have good "ending song" porperties. — |

That would probably be the Tormentos, CD available through Amazon. I didn't know it was a DK number at first, though I liked it. Haven't heard PDM's version. I imagine it's "PD" good. The main DK song I know and like is California Uber Alles. I'm not sure it would be legal to play that in Germany. |
