Randy Holden's Margaya and Everybody Up gets my vote for the evilest sounding surf recordings ever. It's too bad The Fender IV didn't do more.
Unfortunately, they came on the scene too late... Margaya was released in late '64 and Everybody Up in '65. He was also from Baltimore. It's mind blowing to think what might have happened had he been in SoCal in the early 60's at the height of the surf boom.

FWIW, you can order a Fender IV + Sons of Adam CD from Randy Holden's site on the Internet. It's a little pricey, but not unreasonable. It's worth what it costs. It has a number of things you don't find in the usual collections.
What's the story on Baltimore? I heard some glimmering of that once, but then concluded it was mistaken.

Everybody Up is real Punky and Margaya is just straight up mean. Ted mention The Witch which is interesting because if you think about it both Margaya and The Witch(both from 64') are probably the earliest "Evil" sounding songs in Rock n Roll. I love The Fender IV, I too wish that they would have done more.
From Ivan's interview with Randy Holden....
Ivan
Is Everybody Up! sped up at all? On the recording, it would appear that the key is just flat of F, which is a bit odd. In addition, the pace is so frantic, it would suggest that it was sped up a bit.
Could it be possible that the guitars wher just tuned a little too sharp? Because while trying to learn Malibu Run I was having trouble figuring out certain parts. So I just tuned my guitar to the same pitch on the recording. And it turns out all 6 songs are in this same pitch. Plus there's nothing screwy sounding with the vocals on You Better Tell Me Now. And it doesn't sound sped up to me. But then again they probably just added the vocal parts later.
Also after learning the song I decided to learn more Jesters tunes. And the guitars on The Dragsters album are in that same pitch as the Fender IV recordings. Coincidence?!?! Or government cover up? We may never know....
PS: Somebody try this.

As much as I wish the Fender IV had recorded more ... I'm a little bit glad that they didn't. Every song of theirs is flat-out amazing, and that's really impressive.

Totally agree about "Mar Gaya" - I'd throw "Fiberglass Jungle" and the heavy version of "Yang Bu" in the top three. Bonus points to "Fiberglass Jungle" for making a saxophone sound that damn evil.
— That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

"Mar Gaya" is the soundtrack for the most ominous wave ever!
Whilst, this is just beautiful. They seem to have a subtle ska thing going on in some of their songs.

Is this "Malibu Run?" or is it titled incorrectly?

That's the Malibu Crawl.
No, that's Little Ollie. There was a bootleg release of a bunch of Fender IV stuff along with some of Randy Holden's later material, and they botched many of the titles of the instros, so it created a lot of confusion about them.

Someone slipped the band some acid for the recording of Little Ollie. Psycogaragesurfechoplexed gem.
I got lost looking for info on The Fender IV and found The Saints UK version of Wipe Out (Joe Meek) I proceded onto The Saints I'm Stranded (OZ) where I found the drum parts are very surf.
Forgot how much I dug The Saints I'm Stranded.
Look a squirrel.

Funny, that's all I've been listening to this week. I think it's truly the best punk song of all time.

I like Malibu Crawl! Fits the spooky vibe of the song much better!
Here's a great page on Randy and THE FENDER IV with a chronological list of events through the forming of SONS OF ADAM. Great info with tour dates and so on! It says MARGAYA was produced by Russ Regan who signed them to Reprise after hearing their earlier stuff. Russ was one of the men (along with Joe Saraceno of Marketts/Ventures fame) behind The Beach Boys' name change from The Pendeltones. He went on to be a big time record producer.
Check out the link to more about THE FENDER IV...

Good article. Can't believe the Sons of Adam spent time in San Jose. Add another seminal garage band to the list!

Seems like a cover of this song

Ivan, LONELY SURF GUITAR is the flipside to the single KICK OUT by The Safaris.... Note that this is not "The Surfaris" but a vocal group who had an earlier ballad called IMAGE OF GIRL. How's that for confusing? This single was likely made to cash in on the surf craze. Nevetheless, two VERY cool songs! The publisher on this single, Eldorado Music, is the same as the Safaris earlier single. My guess is that Randy was asked to cover the song but since it was never released, they just changed the title to Little Ollie for the later release for publishing reasons.

And I always thought Malibu Run was a Halibuts tune. That ska rhythm sure sounds familiar.

A bit offtopic, but It's actually the 45 that got me into 45 collecting. Found it at a flea market when I was getting desperate for more material for my show. Both sides were absolutely killer, and they had never released an LP and at the time I thought it hadn't been comped (it was though, on Wailin' on the Beach). It became immediately clear to me that I could never skip the 45 sections anymore.
