I posted this on the old Surf Guitar site -
I'm looking for a good bass guitar. I only knock out a few tunes on the weekend with my buddies, so nothing too expensive, but at the same time, no cheap guitars that sound like a fart in a bottle.
On the old site, some folks suggested â
used Mexican Standard Fender Precision or Jazz bass
Fender Jaguar Bass Deluxe
Any other suggestions ?

If $400.00 ($399.99) won't break your bank, you could always jump on a 2005 model Fender Precision Bass, while they're still available. The new 2006 models are $25.00 more, which is why I jumped on a Blue Agave one while the jumpin' was good.

*edit: I forgot to mention that Musician's Friend is where I ordered mine through.

mexi jazz basses are great
this might be good: http://www.squierguitars.com/products/search.php?partno=0310902558 just replace any subpar hardware, and you got yourself a perfect weekender bass (plus the bronco shape is badass)

You can't go wrong with a Mexican Fender Standard,
or even a Fender Squire. IMHO there has never been
a better time to get a quality entry level instrument than
now. Happy hunting!

You might want to look into the SX basses. They are cheap, but are made out of good, solid wood, and they play excellent. The pickup in my P-bass copy was kinda week, so I replaced it w/ a Duncan. So now I have a bass that plays, and sounds better than any Squire I've heard, for around $200.

I like this one:

But I am very happy with this one (I like short scale basses):

They also make some decent cheap Strat copies (again, I think the stock pickups are kinda weak), and this SJM is pretty wild:

Cool! I've been looking for a decent cheap bass to fool around with.
