Anyone on this list live in Central Jersey.
Please prove my theory wrong that this part of Jersey is Ground Zero for bad cover bands. Surf/instro here is, as I quote one guy that answered my ad, "you mean like The Beach Boys, that sounds gnarly, dude".

I know there are some Ventures/surf/instro musicians in NJ. I can't say for sure how many exactly. Some of them are coming to the East Coast Ventures Fan Fest this month. I'm also performing there.
I live in NEPA, not CNJ. I'm also starting a project after this coming Fan Fest to put a group together to play instro early Beach Boys songs at next year's Fan Fest (and hopefully other places). There will be a full band with three guitars, bass, drums and keyboard, and a three-guitar acoustic version. The story of that is here.
Would you like to be part of this project? In the mean time, you can ask Tom if he knows how many of the jammers who show up are close to you. You just might want to get involved in that, too.
— This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

WaveOhhh - Bill.. I think I pointed this out to you 3-5 years ago. You just aren't going to find people that know this type of music 20 minutes down the road in the same or neighboring town. And I know first hand of your reluctance to travel more than an hour away or alternate distant practice sites.
So what do you expect?? Trust me, I've hit on the "I can't practice in a distant planet or state" excuse more times than I can count.
I know of a well-known member of this site who has traveled 3-3.5 hours to a band rehearsal (I think he has a "passport" to the neighboring state). Point is, he wants to do it that badly, so he does.
Bands are a painintheass with learning material and practice. How it pays off to you is how far you want to go with the commitment.
BTW.. are you going to the Ventures FEST on Oct 12th weekend in Crum Lynne in a galaxy far away called Pennsylvania? It's a 2-2.5 hour haul from Central Jersey.
Pack a sandwich. That construction at exit 8A on the Turnpike is a lulu.

Johnny, you are way more dedicated than I am. Play well at the FEST.

WaveOhh...Well I can tell you there are at least 2 of us in Ocean County.
Forked River and Manahawkin to be exact and we both are close to applying for social security. By coincidence we take lessons from the same teacher and he suggested we get together and play the music we professed to want to ultimately be able to do. So we have, although we both stink big time, having only been playing for less than two years, but we're too stubborn to admit defeat and keep on trying.
By the way, my first post after lurking for quite some time...my thanks to all on this forum-a wealth of knowledge, experience and info- without the snark. Remarkable!!

Another Forked River guy here
Who would have thought there are two surf fans in one little south Jersey town?

BTW dmskr, where do you take lessons. I'd love to hook up with someone who loved surf music who could teach me something (being self-taught, that pretty much means anything.)

Baine..We take lessons from Pete Wagula, who lives in Forked River as well. He also teaches the beginner and advanced guitar classes given at the Ocean County VoTech. Pete is an effective teacher, he helps you become a better guitarist with methodical lessons and explanation of the theory, which helped me quite a bit. He also possesses wicked chops and still plays professionally routinely.
