Paging tfj to the internetz.

imageHere are my 1950 Slingerland Radio Kings. The bass drum is 25" I have a Craviotto 14x7 snare that matches the MOP finish of this set perfectly. For a Big Band set, they pound surf perfectly .

Great topic! Here are my gigging tubs. 1970 Ludwig Sky Blue Pearl, 20, 13, 16. I also have a matching 22" bd from 1968 as shown in the last pic.

The gold snare in the first pic is a 1965 Slingerland mahogany 5.5x14 8-lug student model. For higher volume gigs I use a 6.5x14 Pearl Brass Sensitone (pre-Elite) shown in the last pic. Those are my two favorite snares. I also own a 5" mid-70s Supraphonic, a 70s and an 80s Acrolite, a Dynasonic, and a bunch more but seldom gig with them.

For cymbals I have a variety of 20" rides that are washy and crashable, as well as several thin crashes. Mostly 70s A. Zildjian. I have a killer 18" Paiste flat ride that is perfect for lower volume situations. I usually choose one ride and one crash. I switch between a 60s 18" A. Zildjian thin crash and a modern 18" Dream Bliss crash/ride (more of a thin crash than a ride. The next combination I am going to try is a 20" medium ride (2554g) and a 20" crash/ride (2097g).

THANKS EJ! Ludwig calls this color Sky Blue Pearl. I was lucky to find a matching 22" bass drum. The 20" is a bid wimpy but the 22" KILLS! Sky Blue Pearl tends to fade a bit gray over the years but the 1968 22" Keystone Badge bass drum still matches the 1970 Blue/Olive Badge toms. Please excuse the drum geek in me.

Anyone here use or have pictures of those 2-tone Gretsch kits that were out for a while, the ones painted in '57 Chevy colors? First time I saw them I thought they'd look great in a surf band.

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Like this?

Yep! Thanks so much. Gorgeous! Are they Catalina's? Does anyone here use them? As I recall, didn't they also come in red & cream and black & cream?

I know zip about drums but from the Gretsch site these are Renown 57 Motor City's and they did come in different colors.

This is my Sonor Bop Kit that we use for rehearsal and now some recording of our new material.
It's a budget kit but the size and the sound are great.
The kit is augmented in this picture by some of Tom's (our drummer in the picture) better cymbals and a change of snare depending on the track but otherwise the stock kit is really good for Surf/Instro.

Keep those drum shots coming ! Sorry Pete ! My drums are really not mother of pearl like I said earlier, they are white marine pearl Wink either way they both sound and look great! My ride is a fantastic early 90s 21" Pre aged K light dry (super rare)used in the early Morphine recordings if any knows that band.Hows that for drum geek Cool Sonors are wonderful drums as well Jeff ,very studio friendly ,if that's ever possible..hope the tracks went smooth.

Here is a shot of my Gretsch Renown 57 kit - nowhere near as cool as the vintage kits, but Gretsch was practically giving these things away last year. This was taken at the Making Music street festival in Vancouver last June.

PS the snare is a Ludwig, not the Gretsch snare that came with the kit - but the Gretsch snare (6.5x14 10-ply maple) is excellent too ...

I've also gotten my excessive cymbal dependency under control since then...

Steve

The band I play for, The Surfrajets played a gig on Saturday and I had to use the worst cheapest house drums ever! Thankfully I brought my own snare, kick and hi hat pedals (even though I was told specifically NOT to) or it would have been a disaster, instead of just unpleasant...

I hate playing anyone else's drums (especially crappy backline sets). I don't know why guitarists get to at least use their own guitars.

Playing someone else's drums is much more difficult I think ! Good choice on preparedness Slick. I always bring my pedal, snare , ride. Oh sticks and perhaps a splash Wink

I always bring my snare, BD pedal, HH cymbal, ride cymbal, crash cymbal, stick bag, and HH clutch. Snare gets replaced 99%, pedal 70%, cymbals 60% of the time. Have never needed to replace a HH clutch but I've heard horror stories of no clutches on backline kits.
