I'm just wondering what the general concensus is on ukuleles in modern surf music. My main hobby for a while now has been making custom ukuleles, so I thought it would be fun to write a couple of songs with the uke strumming some chords and maybe even joining in on some melody.
Are there any examples of ukes in modern surf?

You mean like these? I like the idea so much I'm thinking of including a uke in some of the songs we'll do in my acoustic surf/instro trio.

Thanks for those videos, Noel. I like 'em both, but that first one is great!
Now my gears are really turning and I can't wait to get home tonight to start composing something.
Thanks!

Oh yeah, I forgot about Tiamane Gardener. I love her! I had an email conversation with her a few months ago and was trying to get her set up with a gig in Chicago but it all fell through at the last moment. Ugh!

Rev Hank Trio have been playing uke versions of surf tunes for a couple of years now. The uke was featured in Urban Surf Kings' holiday original Oh No! It's Christmastime Again on the Snowman Rumble ep.
I also put out a CD in 2011 called Ukulele Surf King that's available from Reverb Ranch & Deep Eddy.

Maybe a stretch to say this is surf related but it is a Beach Boy's tune and pretty cute:

Love to see some of your ukes sometime, Fred. What sizes do you make?
Oh, and yeah, Casey, the video you posted is delightful.

Right now I'm only set up to make tenor scale ukes, but very soon I will set myself up for concerts and sopranos as well.
Here is a link to my uke building blog, which is woefully in need of updating! But there are some pics of ukes I've built in the past there.

Once again, the search engine brings forth; and, once again, surf expands the horizons. (Finkdaddy those are really pretty.)
Was noodling around up the neck on the JM this morning with Martin's Going to Kaleponi in the background & thought that song is kinda voiced crying for a uke & such an instrument would be a bunch of plain old fun. I suspect just for noodling around these are something one should always keep their eye out for. Gotta get down to the pawnshop & look around. And it would travel easy, something to sit outside with on bass tournaments up north, while everyone is swapping lies, till the bugs come out anyway.

If I recall correctly the song Gung Ho for Don Ho
On the first Slacktone cd has ukulele for the rhythm
Part, that the lead plays over.
What's really cool about the song is how Dave
Makes the Electric guitar sound like a lap steel.

Speakin' of Ukes. My brother "Cool Hand Uke" might be opening up for the other 8 bands scheduled at the Surf Stomp at Suzys, Sunday, Memorial Week-end. More details coming soon. So, yes, to answer your question, there is Uke in Surf Music. Not to mention, I love what Martin Cilia has done with some of his tunes with the Uke. Cheers. ;D
