So I'm listening to "Do The Doomdom" (1998) thanks to BTD. I like it. Some surf, some party frat surf, some crazy rockabilly style stuff, great playing and hi energy rollickin guitar. Nice drumming. Anyone know anything about them? I imagine they would have been a blast to see live.

I remember reading some posts from Retodd on Reverborama in the long ago, that is the only thing I know about them.

I saw those guys play back in ' 97 or so. Crazy dudes! But a lot of fun. They're just whacked - that's what that bonus track on the CD is all about!

They're from Nashville, and I have not heard anything about them in years. BUT, I did see that ReTodd is DJing for the Crazy 8s events in Nashville (http://www.ideaprov.com/article.asp?page=crazy.asp), one of which we'll be playing (in late June). So, he's still got his hands in all this somehow... I hope he DJs our show, too, as I'd love to see him again.

The Penetrators may have more dirt on these guys, as they were very close back in the day.

We (Daytonas) had some contact with the Phantom 5ive in the mid 90s prior to our California tour and had some plans on doing shows together on the east coast (I think we had records out on the same label based in New York). Unfortunately, due to shortage of time and money we had to cancel those plans. I'm sure it would had been a lot of fun.

What is with the band the Phantom 4 then? Different band?

Brian asks: "Anyone know anything about them? I imagine they would have been a blast to see live."

Saw them many times on bills with the Penetrators. In their first lineup, they aspired to be the (first wave) Astronauts, covering some of that band's most obscure tunes. In their later lineup, they were technically more proficient, still rollicking, but not quite as goofy. Todd, the bass player throughout, is a good man to trade tapes with.

The Phantom Four is Phantom Frank from the Treble Spankers' new band.

Does anyone know if the (Thee?) Phantom 5ive put out anything besides Do the Doomdom and those two EPs?

-Warren

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Don't know if it's one of those two EPs, but I remember a 45 by them including a cover of the Astronauts' "Surf Party" I think.

They did a cover of "Nite rider" on the (Dickheads- Dick Dale)tribute 10 in. record.
I'm sure they were probably on some other comps too.

I see Todd whenever he comes through SF. Hell of a guy, and he seems to know everybody who ever played in any band in the South or Southeast. He played bass on a European tour with Eddie Angel in the Neanderthals a few years ago...

Yeah, I remember a really great post that Todd made about his Neanderthals Euro-tour experiences...maybe it was on Reverborama.

I think that may be Play Guitars Galore--does it also have a cover of the Astronauts' version of "Quite Village"?

Also, if anyone has an extra copy of Do the DoomDom they're looking to sell ...

The first bar gig we ever played was with Thee Phantom 5ive. We had such a blast, when the bar closed at 2am (It was a Saturday night) we moved the gear to the house Trace and Rip were living in at the time and played to at least 5am. The quote of the night was Todd coming up to ask - "Man, what kind of neighborhood do ya'll live in?"

The problem with Thee Phantom 5ive is they are the worst self promoters of all time. I wish Todd would post show listings on Surfguitar101 or Reverborama.

We've played many gigs with them and they are great fun. Neal used to put on this muppet like Pink frilly coat to play drums etc. They also employed go go dancers to keep things interesting.

Our first recordings were released by Solamente records on a split 7" called Thee Phantom 5ive vs The Penetrators. It sparked the idea to play a tag team gig where each band would play 30 minute sets with 5 minutes between bands going back and forth, about 3 sets each. It was complete with a ring master and each band throwing insults at each other while on stage. Great fun. Photo's of that night can be found on our sorely needed to be updated web site here...

I did some research and found out it was not an EP but a single called "Jump Start".

Did Thee Phantom 5ive put on good shows?

Yeah, good in a loose, spontaneous, fun way. They never took themselves too seriously. They didn't have the polish of the Penetrators, let alone the showmanship of Man or Astro-man?, but as Spanky mentioned they often had go-go dancers.

I saw 'em play once on the Surfari USA tour in '97 in Nashville. A very entertaining live act - funny costumes, go-go dancers and crazy, energetic surf music. Todd's a great guy and I've kept in touch with him ever since that show. As for the odd bonus track - I can't remember the exact story, but I believe they got the recording from a record store owner here in Bellingham. I remember talking to the shop owner, and mentioned the Phantom 5ive to him, and he knew exactly who they were. I had the P-5 CD in stock at the time and sold him a copy of it.

Oops--my mistake. They have too many Astronauts covers to keep track of anyways.
