One of favorite covers is Besame Mucho by The Ventures from Live in Japan '65. Far superior to their studio version of the song, it's one of the many highlights of Live in Japan '65. One of my favorite albums of all time.

Norm, I don't think that they are the same.
Exotic yes, the same thing no.
and the LSJ's also play the Orientals version too.
I believe that without a doubt Podolor must have been influenced by the earlier version that was an often covered "standard". But like I said, you be the judge.

Norm, I wanted to believe you, as I'm a huge fan of the song and am interested in it's history, but I hear no evidence of Nelson/Podolor's version in the Orientals' version.

I would agree that it's more "heavily influenced by" rather that an actual cover. That said, for the longest time I thought it was the same song.
Another great cover is Rise and Fall of Flingel Blunt by PJ and the Galaxies. I heard this version first before The Shadows and we based our cover on the version by PJ back when we started our band. Great tune!

I like the Beach Boys version of "Moon Dawg" better than the original.
Also dig the Cramps "Surfin Bird" & they did a kick butt song called
"Surfin' dead". The Ventures have the best version of "Wild Thing" .
Of course, as far as cover artists go, nobody comes close to William Shatner.

Yet another bump...yet another very interesting topic! Hey, these bumps couldn't have anything to do with topics for Surf Guitar 101 on North Sea Surf Radio, could they? ;)

Best surf cover of a non-surf song is The Baronics playing "Summer" from The Four Seasons by Vivaldi. It's also the only fast 3/4 time surf song I can think of. You can hear it here:

The Challengers Version of Lonely Bull is probably my favorite of that song.

We can't delete posts. We can delete their contents, though. Most people just replace the mistake with N/C for No Content, or Oops!

Agreed! An excellent cover! Some songs on that album work better than others in surf format, but "Spring," "Summer," and "Rondo Alla Turca" are absolutely inspired!

I know I'm new around these part but the song that made me want to start a band was the Pixies cover of Cecilia Ann. I was already into surf but that cover just shook me. It's pretty faithful but it rocks like hell!

My favorite surfed up song is The Tomorrowmen's Clair De Lune. It was my mother's favorite piece of music and oddly enough my wife's so it has a real special place in my heart. I was suspect of a surf version but wow this is just amazing! And I know the guys who did it! So do most of you.
