So, the thought process and writing is starting for the next Kill,Baby...Kill! album. Everything we have does has been approached as though it might be the last thing we do, therefore we are always trying to up our ambition. With this in mind, there are going to be one or two places on the next record where we would like strings. After working with various members of The Mystery Men? on our last record we grew to love the idea of including our peers on our recordings. Personally I would love to have some of the string work done by fellow SG101 members. I am wondering if there are any Cello or Violin players on here. If so, do any of you have the ability to do good home recordings?

I don't think Cellodude has posted since 2007. There used to be a violin, cello, electric bass, drums group in Denver called Hi-Strung. Actually, I don't think they've given up the ghost, but the cellist moved to Seattle this summer, so I suppose they are singing a different tune or two. The band leader was in a very metallic effort called Von Hexen a few years ago, and then in a psychedelic band called Overcasters, so she would in general be or have been in friendly territory. But she's the bassist, and I don't believe she or any of the strings were into surf and none of the band is in SG101 anyway. Sounds like an interesting idea, though, and I hope you'll find a way to make it happen.

There were some cello and violin parts on the first (never officially released) album by Plan9 from Berlin that really added a special atmosphere to it - kind of melancholic. However you should keep in mind that adding strings will mean that you will in all likelyhood have to write out the parts for them...
That being said: I know that sg101 member mtkoltan plays cello and even performed with a band at the release party for the "Krautsurf" compilation (video below). I don't know if he visits here regularily, so I would recommend to contact him directly.
And ask again, when you're ready to add some brass.

PS: I just looked it up and there were only violin(s) played on the mentioned album by Plan9. Until recently you could download the whole album (and some newer songs) from their website, but the link on the title page seems to have been lost. However the songs are still there:

Strings are included on: Desert Stomp and Serious Delirious, but the rest is also worth checking out. (This was the first surfband I ever saw live and their second album (Beach Buster) is still one of my favorites).

Thanks for the information. Writing parts isn't a problem on my end. And, honestly, we have access to string players regionally. I just wanted to put it out there to SG101 members to be involved if possible.
Brass might come into play. However, we have three brass players in the band. And we also have access to the local college corp. that practices a block from our rehersal space. We hope to utilize part of their drum line on the next album as well. Time will tell. Ambition vs. reality are often two very different things.

Noah, On our last record and the current one we're working on I always hear and want broader, string and or horn/wind arrangements for some of the songs but it can get SO expensive here in Nashville that it's cost prohibitive and keys don't usually cut it for what I hear.
I hope you can make it happen and look forward to hearing what you guys are writing for it.

Jeff,
You should drop us a line. It is likely we could find some horn players to come help you out for little to no cost.

Will do Noah.
I don't mind paying, we just don't have much and I don't want to offend anyone.
You made my day!

Chad,
I assumed that is the route we would end up going. But I wanted to put it out there for SG101 members, just in case any played.

I play fiddle, and I do a ton of home recording. If you can't find anyone else, I'd give it a go.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am sure that I will be contacting a few of your suggestions when recording gets underway for the album next year. But working with those who are out of town will certainly require they have easy access to a home recording station.
