I just wanted to share a video of my band performing at Play For Change Day on 9/21/13 here in Indy. A huge thanks to normj for the use of his Strat and Showman head for this performance!

Nick,

Congratulations. You guys are off to a good start.

Later,
Norm

Great job, Nick! What a cool gig, too! Two gigs in three days, too, right? Didn't you play the Melody Inn on Thursday? How did both shows go?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. I'm very lucky to play with these fellows and I'm proud of what we've accomplished in such a short time together. I'm finally starting to feel 'at home' in Indianapolis.

Yes Ivan, we played the Melody in on the 19th. It was my wife's birthday and we were able to find a sitter for our son so we could go celebrate together. That alone was wonderful - having a three year old and no family nearby means these nights out together are both precious and rare. The show itself was good, considering that we went on last of four bands and it was nearly 1am when we started. Neither the camera or field recorder worked properly that night unfortunately.

Saturday was an absolute blast though. Play For Change Day is an amazing charity event (97 cents per dollar donated goes to help fund music programs in schools all around the globe) and we were honored to play it. The weather was perfect, the turnout was great, and we got to play the main stage right before the opening act. So much fun I can't put it into words and to me this is what this music is all about. And best of all? My son got to watch us play finally! Playing this music has taken a on a whole new meaning for me now that I've looked out into the crowd and seen my son sitting there watching me play.

My wife did her best with the videos while trying to keep our son out of the fountain and I'm grateful to her for her endless support. For reference, I'm the guy in the red shirt with the red guitar. Thanks again to Norm for allowing me to use and play this wonderful gear!

Terrific! Thanks for sharing, Nick. Congratulations on getting the band off to such a good start. Your Green Onions has a catchy swing to it that I really like.

And that was plenty nice of Norm to lend you his gear! Smile

hi!
sounds nice ... i am a little bit skeptical about the band name, honestly speaking - especially as i recall some controversy about a german band that called themselves the surf taliban ...

but it sounds great!

Wolfi, I was also skeptical about the name. I think it would not be used in Europe for sure.

The current name of the German Air Force, is, I believe, the Luftwaffe, which is a generic German language word for air force.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Air_Force

There is no organizational continuity between the current Luftwaffe of the Bundeswehr and the former Luftwaffe of the Wehrmacht founded in 1935, which was completely disbanded in 1945/46 after World War II. The term Luftwaffe that is used for both the historic and the current German air force is the German-language generic designation of any air force, thus not establishing a link between the two forces.

Still, I wouldn't go there. But that might just be my cultural bias speaking. But if a guy like Wolfi, who is Austrian, also has reservations...

Sorry to mess up your thread with this, Nick. Did you see these questions coming?

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

hi!

i feel a little bit guilty for spoiling athread with something that could be interpreted (and maybe is) PC over-the-top ...

The current name of the German Air Force, is, I believe, the Luftwaffe,

well - the term "Luftwaffe" was introduced in Nazi Germany; it is still being used today for "Air Force"- however, "Luftstreitmacht" is also possible and is the older name from WW I. I really don't want to be a nitpicker, but honestly speaking the whole thing has some ugly connotations. We named our band after crackling, but that is less disgusting than having an association with Hermann Goering and Guernica ...

just a few thoughts.

Perhaps no one was/is more skeptical of the name than me. The situation was that we had to come up with a name in a matter of hours to get a show. We all threw out names and everyone voted for their favorite. To me it seemed a democratic way to approach the situation, however it was not my first choice.

Thank you all so much for your comments, it means a lot to me!

THAT Red Strat! Is that the one Matt played at the Instro Summit?

Ivan,

Two gigs already. They hit the ground running. I'd say those guys are off to a pretty good start. They sound pretty good considering how short a time they have been together. Got the first gig jitters under their belt. Second gig was a fun venue. Nice start.

Norm

So are you guys real surf nazis or what?
Just kidding.
Sheesh kabab, people are so hypersensitive these days about bad guys from long ago. I head people gripe about that hilarious nazis-from-the-moon Finnish movie, Iron Sky – which actually makes out the Americans to be worse than the nazis.
Remember Hogan's Hero's? That was only about 20 yrs after the end of WWII. Colonel Klink, Sargeant Schultz – hilarious.
We've become much more internationalist now and lost our sense of humor.
I'm all for making fun of bad guys as much as possible. But I guess that makes me unpopular.
Oh well, keep flyin'!

Squink Out!

I don't think that's the point, JObeast.

I just got home from practice and talked with the guys about the band name and they agree that it's probably not the best choice for the long term. I want this kind of music to be about fun and dancing and drinking and beautiful Fender gear, not politics or disagreement.

So, if anyone here has an extra band name to spare that fits with our Midwestern-surf vibe please pass it on and I'll put it on the list. We're voting again in one week from tonight on a new name for our band, so there's a little time to decide. Although, we may have to play one or two more gigs billed as our current name.

As always, I appreciate the surf community and this forum more than words can express.
