Part 1: Drums
Greetings from mystic dungeons of Twang-O-Matic studios! We started to record our third album (EP) called Meltdown and decided that i write some notes from our recordings. As earlier projects we decided that i will do the recordings and mixing. The mastering we will subcontract that we get at least one external pair of ears.

First thing to do was dangerous. We have to capture the werewolf which has been running wild since Apocalypse 2012. Luckily my vampire friend (Rutiger) is good in scouting cause his flying talent. Also the werewolf is not very good to stay in shadows and rumors about destroyed villages lead us to right path. So we used same trick as in earlier recordings. We put tasty kebab roll in the cage and started to wait the beast. And when he sense it ,it didn´t take too much time when our drummer was eating his meal satisfied in locked cage. When noticed his position it was our luck that the cage hold up until we got in Twang-O-Matic studios. We knew from our experience that when the beast saw the drums he will cool down and will concentrate his energy in the drums. Perhaps there is a part of human still left in him which wake up always when he see the drums… So we did it! The beast was beating his drums with furious attitude! Next i have to concentrate more seriously how to cache the sound. image
For me the recording and mixing is ongoing learning process. I´m not an complete expert and learning these things is part of the fun as well as the playing. Our goal is to create album that sounds like us and is not replicate of any classic surf album. So we are free to express ourselves. Hopefully with this type of doing our every album will sound better than previous one Smile Although they all sound quite nice to our ears and are precious pictures of the time and part of the story of The Grande Bois.

The drum recording were made with Pro Tools 9. Preamps were Digi 002 and Behringer ADA8000. The preamps used were cheap but i believe the good starting sound, the place, the place of the microphone and the microphone itself is more significant than a expensive preamps. And with bad microphone placing you loose the benefits of high quality preamps. Cause we are doing low budget recording and we don't have extra money this is a one place to save. So the drum man tuned his drums and we were able to go on.

In this record we wanted that the drums has more organic and more "live" sounding sound versus our earlier The Grande Bois albums. This time we were also not afraid of hearing the sound of the recording place - small concrete cellar (in fact the place is our training place:)). Earlier we have done quite clean and dry drum sounds in same place.

Cause the recording place was small and the roof was quite low i put the overheads somewhat to the front of the drums (length to snare≍1.5meter) at height of my own ears, instead putting the mics straight to the top of the drums. Mics were small diaphragm Octava MK-012 condensers. Cause the room was not very wide i used XY- stereo technique which gave quite narrow stereo image about the drums. I did this cause i thought i don't want to try sound anything else than the room can give in. XY-pair is also on same phase. The result was very natural sounding drums with medium amount of space. We loved them! "Sounding like our training place!" was our happy react. Snare were quite distant but just wait… more mics were used in the session.

The kick drum has two mics. Beta52 was just outside peeking inside the kick drum. Samson "something" condenser mic were at the same distance as the overheads was from the drums (≍1,5 meter from the snare) and height of the kick drum . The mic was inserted inside the "KickTunnel" (watch the picture). Tunnel were made from mattresses and carpets Smile Just wanted to try something different. All the damps were also removed from the kick drum. The result was wow effect when we were recording. Now when listening afterwards the Beta52 sounds quite unnatural with lots of "snap". When listening by itself it sounds same like the kick drums in heavy music. I would not use by oneself. But we are counting on "wow" effect and when mixing along with overheads and another mics the result is promising at least interesting Smile . The "Kicktunnel" microphone were quite natural and surprisingly quite dry thanks to mattresses.

Snare was interesting project. I used three different mics just because wanted to experiment with the sound (see the picture). Two snare were added to the top of the snare. SM57 and Shure Q snare were both pointing at the centrum of the snare. Even though they were very close each other the result was quite different. SM57 was quite dull by itself. Lot of fatness, unnatural, not so much crispness. Q-snare was more natural, the wood and the "ping" and more crispness heard in it. Third mic was Shure KSM-102 pointing towards side of the snare drum. This mic added some character but wouldn't use it all by itself. I also tried how it sounds from beneath the snare but it doesn't gave me the "wow" effect so i turn out to insert it to the side of the snare. If i had to use just one mic for creating the snare sound in this project i would use the Q-snare. It had a good mix of all elements that our snare have. In the end i think i will build the sound from all three of them. I also added small acoustic element between snare and hi-hat to minimize the leak from the hi-hat. I thought it worked quite well.

Cause our drummer is quite gentle handed i also miked the toms to have the opportunity to heighten them if i want. Miking them was nothing special. SM57 pointing to the centrum of the tom at distance of two finger width from the drum foil. To the floor tom i also added bottom microphone cause i felt i didn't get enough fatness and sustained sound from it. Bottom mic was Q-snare and it worked well.image
Our next step is to record bass. Something new have to be tried versus earlier recordings. What is it i don't know yet… Read about it afterwards Smile One problem is also that our vampire (bass player) has flew away to look for fresh blood of virgins to get satisfied. So any hints to get him back is taken. But anyhow... we are once again quite exited from the upcoming recording. The drums sounds amazing and the songs are yber cool and absolutely sounding from us. Part 2:Bass

Hello everybody! Glad news. We found our bloodlust Vampire hanging upside-down on a tree after having a good meal (few dead bodies were laying around beneath the tree). It was necessary to give him the moment to feed himself before recordings because we all know how unbelievable fast vampires can be when they are in their full strength. And i can say in these songs some speed is needed ;)

So the bass recordings are over and the vampire retreat to his chamber to rest with his fingers full of blister. Good job! Awesome bass tracks captured and this is how we did it…

p.s.
… and we tried few different mic positions (one is seen in the picture) and get the result that the "close" sound was best to get from the DI-box once again. We also split the signal from the DI-box to amp and recorded it with XY- stereo pair about 3 meters away from the cabinet just to add some room tone to clean DI sound. This combination worked well and produced us a solid but still natural bass sound. It was interesting to notice that all the experiment with micing the amp produced somewhat same type of result as the sound from the DI-box. Only the DI-box sounded better this time. The gear used this time was Orange Terror Bass with Ampeg cabinet.

Third step is to record guitars. We are quite exited about it because i just bought the legendary '63 FENDER TUBE REVERB! Can´t wait to hear it on record.

The Grande Bois recording diaries - Part3: Guitars done. EP finally on the homestretch!

Hi everybody. Guitars and sound effects recorded! Zombie got his fingers back and scrabbled the guitar tracks in. It was all about blood, sweat and tears. Really…

Blood is understandable because that is what you get when you put zombie messing with guitar. Sweat you get from thousand and thousands takes (actually only one take per guitar track was needed.. "sure" ). Tears you get because the brand new Fender Tube Reverb didn't worked despite of several fixes! Although the story start dramatically it has happy ending Smile

I bought new ´63 Fender Tube Reverb Reissue. The immediate problem was that the wet signal cuts in and out. Tube reverb was sent from store to authorized Fender repair man to another country (you cannot repair it with local fixer cause you loose the quarantee, specification or something by fender plaah…) It took about month and the reverb came back with report "fixed". Jiihaa! but… first rehearsal and the wet signal started to cut in and out. Back to the store and same procedure. Reverb was sent again over the sea to repair man. Some time went and it came back with report: "fixed and tested". Few rehearsals and one gig and the wet sig…n..al.ll..gal… started to cut in and out. In this point the store gave me new one (thanks to them they deal the whole process very properly) but few rehearsals and gigs it started again. Nervous breakdown followed. Is this the so called Fender quality?Or is the problem in me? Perhaps just bad production flight? I have also bad experiences about my Stratocaster which tremolo arm have broke several times until i changed into Gotoh tremolo. All this and my trust to Fender is slowly (and sadly) gone…

Anyhow, i didn´t have time to waste anymore so i decided to repair the reverb unit myself even though i´m not fully familiar with electronics. Quarantee gone but who cares. I ordered new spring tank, few cables and tubes. Changed the parts and it started to work and is still working. I have to say it sounds awesome and have always sounded, it just didn't worked Smile Personally i think the problem was in the spring tank (maybe they didn´t change it, dunno…). In future if i buy reverb tank i will consider something else or i order custom. I have already ordered custom guitar from local guitar builder and cant wait to get it. You will see Smile

But back to recordings. It all happened with frankestein Strato (almost every part changed), Fender Tube Reverb (gladly got it working) and Deluxe Reverb. Also Squier Jaquar was used in few tracks. Microphones used were Sennheiser e906 and Octava condencer. e 906 pointing at center of the element and the octava pointing in the edge of the element.

The sound is now more traditional surf than in our earlier recordings thanks to Reverb Unit. Despite i have bad experiences about the quality of the reverb i love its sound! It so surf! Overall i think that the guitar tracks are still sounding identifiable Grande Bois.

Some psycho effects and synths were also recorded to complete the soundscape. The upcoming EP is also mixed and next stage is mastering the album.The EP is fully crafted by the Grande Bois except the mastering.

The release date will be somewhere in November. We promise to inform about it. Until then… Surf´s up! www.thegrandebois.com

Wow! Quite an adventure getting your reverb fixed. A few folks here have been through the same thing. It's like no one actually used it until it stopped working, so they didn't know what was wrong. Glad you were able to fix it yourself.

I'm looking forward to hearing the record.

I hope the flacks at FMI Inc. (business conglomerate which owns the Fender name) read this forum or have bot that does data mining for them. Or maybe they think all surf musicians are just poimanently loyally fetischistically fixated on their legacy of products and will always buy them no matter what.
Your narrative above demonstrates an extraordinary level of patience and trust that just doesn't seem to be merited any more.
I myself have no personal griped with FMI products but will relate my story about other musical instrument brands who have lost my trust.
I will never buy a Trace Elliot amp again because I experienced an inexplicable breakdown of my Velocette that required a fix at 50% of the depreciated cost of the amp. After that loss of confidence, I was only too happy to sell it at a loss rather than get stuck with another eventual untoward breakdown that would cost another 50% of the price.
I recently bought a Behringer MIDI controller that came to me new shipped with a piece of plastic rattling around inside of it. I could not figure out how to make it 'map' my MIDI devices and sold it at a loss. The buyer came back with a request for a substantial partial refund because of a problem with indicator lights. I had to bargain with him for weeks to get him off my back, even after sending him a check. Needless to say, I won't be buying Behringer again.

I understand why a player needs a real Fender Reverb unit. I get by with an old Gibson Reverb III solid-state unit I bought long ago (in my pre-surf days). I had to have signal caps replaced on it recently and the amp doc derided it as 'not the real deal, never going to satisfy' Well, it may not be a Fender, but I am working with it for now! If I ever realize the need for a Fender unit, I will buy a Texotica because it's built like an old Fender, point-to-point, and competitively priced – plus Texotica is like one dedicated man struggling to make excellent handcrafted gear against economies of scale – not a cog in a massive conglomerate that by the way, makes musical equiment.

Good points. Musicians may buy FMI products just because their once received status (which doesn´t necessarily merited anymore as said above) without searching better opportunities. At least i bought Fender just cause i had a opinion that it is one of the flagships of instruments. I have few friends which warn about the quality of the reissue amps and problems in maintenance but i was blind. But i´m slowly learning. Obviously the problem is mainly in reissues and in new products which are made in a assembly line somewhere. Surely there are great ones made in the past.
