A Madeira guitar is an off-brand cheapo piece of junk. If I'm not mistaken, they were made in Korea. I got mine for free from my late grandfathers wacky sports equipment/musical instrument store. It's a Les Paul copy. When I was young and ignorant, I thought that taking it to be set up would be good, but the guy put tiny strings on it and made the action so low, that the guitar lost all its character. I used to play "crossover hardcore" back then, and the cheap humbuckers would feedback like crazy. After a while I got some Jackson pickups for free, and put them on the guitar. Later, I put some Barritone strings on it and tuned it down to B. Some interesting tones...but not really useful for anything (except for when I was in the Astroglides and we did a joke cover of Sepultura's "Roots" where we switched the lyrics to the ones from "I'm too sexy" . We called it "Roots, sexy roots").

Hi Dug; Ran is only partially correct - though of course I use the AC30 for the Shadows stuff, I did use it for surf a fair amount, too. When the Madeira first got going, the only Fender amp I had was the Blues Deluxe, and so the AC30 was my main surf amp. I used it for the first four or five Madeira shows. I was actually excited about using it, as I really love the sound of an AC30. Put the reverb unit before it, and it's a great sound, though of course not the completely traditional one. The problem was that as loud as the AC30 is, it just isn't loud enough to cut through when the Madeira gets really going. I couldn't turn it up past 5 or at most 6, because it would start overdriving too much. So, I eventually got the Dual Professional, which is VERY loud. When recording our CD last summer, I used both amps simultaneously. The Dual Pro provided the main meat of my tone, but the AC30 was a nice supplement, providing a lot of midrange warmth. I know Dave Wronski also uses an AC30 when recording (along with some 3 or 4 other amps). Finally, this whole thing was just a repeat of the same experience I had with the Cossacks - when the band first started, I had an (not very good) AC30, and used it for our live shows for several months. But trying to get the amp loud enough and clean enough would start to seriously overheat it and it kept breaking down on me, which was very frustrating. After several months of that, I came across a Fender Vibrasonic Custom, a nice clean, 100W, 1x15" amp and that became my main amp for the Cossacks. I still used the AC30 as the second amp for recording, just as I do now. I do love, love those amps. Amazing tone. I think there are a handful of surf (or surfy) bands in Europe that use AC30s for surf. I believe Langhorns do, Laika & the Cosmonauts (more recently anyway), some others that I can't think of now. So, I'd say, put a reverb unit before that AC30, and if you don't have to play it too loud, it'll be a cool surf amp!

Ivan

Very cool, thanks for the info. I've been playing 60's Bluesbreakers-style blues for about 8 yrs, and an early 70's AC30 was my main amp. When I starting playing surf and garage pretty seriously about a year ago I switched to deluxe reverb when I switched to playing a strat (had been playing a Les Paul of course :)), just because it initially sounded better without effects and fuddling with my set up too much. I also don't a reverb unit (yet) and was working with a digiverb peddle. However this weekend I spent some time with the AC30 again, and actually some really pretty nice surf tones, not completely traditional as you mentioned, but still great. They really do sound amazing, plus I think they look cool as hell. I will certainly be using it more in future, especially when I finally get a reverb tank.

And to stay on topic, my gear list...

Guitars:

'62 RI MIJ Strat (Blk, Lollar pu's)
'65 Super Excellent Mosrite (Ink Blue, gift from the wife, and my new #1)
Eastwood Ichiban (Blk, my other new love, amazing guitar)
'59 Les Paul CA RI (best surf guitar ever Twisted Evil )
'62 AV Strat, IBM, that was sadly run over by a truck, waiting to get rebuilt

Amps:
70-71 Vox AC30
'65 Fender Deluxe (had a rebuilt one, now a RI, see my post about that )
'64 Silvertone 1482
'65 Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve

I'll get some pics when I get my camera back from a friend. If I post a pic of the smashed Strat, would that be the equivalent of snuff porn? Shocked

Did you guys ever record that? Twisted Evil

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

must say i 'm curious about the 'candy apple blue'!

WR

"Candy Blue" is generally transparent blue over a silver undercoat.
A gold undercoat is usually used for "candy apple red".
The reflective undercoat gives an illusion of depth.

That's quite the all-star band there. Sir Finks, High Noon, & the Ugly Beats all in one package. Mike Guerro rules, it's nice to see him out playing surf again!

I'm gonna try to catch you guys at Beerland.

Nice guitars, too.

I saw the Fiesta Red Jazzmaster and assumed it was Mike's. But, then again Mike's doesn't have that guard... Hamm's the beer refreashing...
