Especially because the Stage 112SE is a 160 watt amp, and we know how powerful the Quilters are!

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

On the other hand I was just told by Quilter to go ahead and use my MicroPro-200 8-inch. Already been done and no failures. Is there anything that amp can't do? Sounds really good, BTW.

I've used my baritone B-B through my low wattage Gomez G-Reverb w/a 15" JBL...no worries..sounds great

I've really only tried this combo at moderate volume. I'll know a lot more on Saturday when I play it a whole lot louder (empty house Big Grin ).

Shouldn't you have a bass speaker for the Bass VI? I have a Sica PL15B25S super lightweight speaker just sitting here. I had it in my tone-ring cab, but swapped it out when I got a JBL D140F...HEAVY!

So Matt, tell me about this speaker. I assume you replaced it with the JBL D140F because, well, it's a JBL D140F. But how did the Sica sound?

The Sica was new and never really got broken in. It sounded pretty good, though. Yeah, I switched to the JBL for maximum weight. Wink

I dunno. I really want this to sound like a guitar tuned an octave lower, not a bass. That's just how it sounds using my old Stage 112SE; it flat twangs out! Is that the amp, the guitar, the speaker, or all three together? But your point about a bass speaker is valid. I don't want to bust a guitar speaker that's not up to the bass register.

I honestly think that you might be happier with the B-B/A-A baritone setup using Daddario XL157
The La Bellas are great for that tic/tac, wet click
echo/reverb'ish bass sound, it can't be played/strummed as a guitar, allowing only a few chords in the upper register. It will be a bass, B-B will be nicer on those guitar-speakers allowing you to play it like a reg. tuned guitar. I remember having the solo-part from Witchita lineman as a bass VI reference before getting one myself skip to 1.47 the route to this tone, along with the Morricone'sque spy/spag-west sound will be the B-B setup. Maybe a second bass VI with the La Bellas in time.

Thanks, Rudi. I already have a B-B baritone I made out of a spare Strat. It has heavy flats on it (D'Addario Jazz .015 - .065 pulled from their Light 7-string set). It sounds and plays terrific and I use it a lot; it owns the first four songs we're performing in October. But it simply whetted my appetite for an E-E tuned guitar. So I now have both, as well as a J-Bass. The Jaguar pickups in the Bass VI give it a totally different sonic feel than the J-Bass. It's way to soon to tell which will be the novelty and which will see the most use.

I'll do some testing today, J-Bass, Bass VI and Baritone, playing the same parts on each. I'm curious what I discover.

I've long wanted to put flats on the J-Bass because I just don't like the scratchy sound of those heavy coils against a pick and when I do glissandos. The Bass VI is definitely getting flats, but maybe now the bass doesn't.

And also, thanks again Rudi, for your guidance during the intonation process. You were a big help. Everyone was. I appreciate all the help. Thanks everyone.

I disagree. The bass VI isn't a baritone. Tune it as it was intended and play it through a guitar amp. It will sound great. And you CAN play cords on it, although you may not want to strum too vigorously (Robert Smith may have a different view). Don't forget the reverb, obviously.

Los Fantasticos

When we realized how floppy the stock #6 string was (.086) we thought about tuning the Bass VI a couple tones higher. Not as high as B-B but somewhere above E-E. But I decided against it because I stink at transposing positions on a guitar neck. I even tuned my Bari-Strat so its' top 5 strings are the same as the bottom 5 on a standard tuned guitar. That way I don't have to change chord forms or anything to play it; I simply adjust up a string and use the low-B when I need it. Works perfectly for me. Tuned E-E, I just play my Bass VI exactly as I would any guitar.

I do everything I can to keep things simple; it's all I can handle for now.

I just finished hi-volume testing the Squier Bass VI with my amps. I had the Squier volume on 10 for all tests.

My Quilter MicroPro-200 was stupid loud (Gain 8/10. Master Volume 8/10. Gain Limiter Off) without speaker flutter. The tone, even with only the neck pickup on, was super-crisp. The amp picked up and exaggerated every scratch of my fingers on those round wound strings. Using a pick cut the scratch way down, but glissandos and slides were still painful. Turning Gain off got rid of some but not all of this at this volume level. Overall, I found the Quilter too brilliant (think Dolby sound samples of breaking glass and things they put at the beginning of films these days) to play with the Bass VI at super-hi volume. But at recording volumes the amp sounds wonderful with none of these effects. Balanced, no unwanted noises, very guitar-like. It suppose it will do fine mic'd and through its' Direct Out to a sound board at a reasonable volumes.

Trying to use my Peavey 30 Bass amp was a failure. The speaker fluttered at 8/10 volume and the amp wasn't anything nearly loud enough. It really isn't designed for these volumes. It sounded nice at lower volumes when I played on the high B & E strings, but not nearly as nice as the Quilter. It's just a practice amp after all.

The Music Man 212-130HD? I didn't need to bother with using it on Hi (130 WATTS). Low (65 WATTS) was plenty loud enough to rattle everything near it. It sounded the best by a lot. I kept the Bass VI on the bridge pickup out of deference to the speakers, and the tone was all Fender guitar, except lower.

Since I won't take the Music Man anywhere, I'm going to have to give serious thought to my old Fender Stage 112SE. It's plenty loud, if not as loud as the Music Man 212-130HD, makes the Bass VI sound terrific at normal performing volumes, and is pretty inexpensive. Even has an effects loop missing from the Music Man.

Is this a valid test? I don't know. But it answered the questions I had about using a Squier Bass VI with my guitar amps at very high volume. I hope you find it helpful.

Good run-down. I'm thinking the Quilter as a head would fare much better with a 15" cab at higher volumes. The MP200 head is indeed magical, but an 8" speaker is still just an 8" speaker, and bassier tones like bigger speakers.

Absolutely! And that's my quandary. For a LOT less than what it would cost me to get the right 15" speaker and put it in a cab, I can reacquire my old Stage 112SE amp, and I already know how fabulous my Bass VI sounds through it. It's also a lot cheaper than Quilter's own extension cab. And thanks!

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Squire Bass VI is a hoot to play!

Here's mine. I uploaded these to SG101 using Brian's new feature. For some reason, even though the pics are stored vertically on my drive, they uploaded horizontally. Also, the color is too warm; I used the wrong light setting on my camera. The guitar is actually much more fiery than in these pics. Still, notice the liveliness of the wood on the back. It's really gorgeous in person.

One more thought. If I ever do decide to put a better-feeling neck on my Sunburst & Tortoise Jaguar, I'll get a bound and inlaid neck, just like this one. It really does look gorgeous. Feels really nice, too.

Mike, after hearing mine on just the bridge pickup through my Music Man, with some of that amp's fine tremolo, I'm looking forward to hearing what you can do with one of these things.

Here's another set of demos - an Anderton's shoot out:

Yes, it's that much fun to play. If I played like they do, I'd be laughing myself silly with it, too.

Maybe Matt will PM me about his unused 15" speaker?
