Permalink D'Addario Balanced Tension strings; trying em out today

New Topic

I've been using regular D'Addario EXL115 strings for awhile now with no complaints. I generally buy them in bulk for around $3.50 a pack. They sound decent and seem to last a bit longer than other brands I've used.

Anyway I fell for the hype and ordered a 3 pack of the new D'Addario "Balanced Tension" EXL115s. I just put on a set and intonated. Not a whole lot of difference in the string gauges, but the "balanced tension mathematically optimized string gauge combinations" sounds logical. They cost a little more btw Cry

I'll report back after some use.

Anybody else using these?

I did some beta testing of those for D'Addario.
I thought they'd be hype but they were pretty cool and I did notice a difference. It hasn't caused me to switch over from the regular sets, their regular strings are great and I'm just not that picky but they felt good.

So after rehearsal last night I can report back that it's not all hype. Definitely a better balanced more comfortable set of strings. If the price holds I'm going to start using the D'Addario Balanced Tension EXL115 sets.

Is it a day / night difference...no. Is it worth the extra $$$...meh, you'll have to weigh it out and decide for yourself.

I'm a pretty frugal musician and don't like the idea of paying more money for essentially the same type of strings in just different gauges. It seems if these are indeed just a better engineered set D'Addario would charge the same price as regular XL115s.

I normally order strings in bulk (online dealers) so I'll do as usual and wait until I can get the best deal possible using an e-coupon or online sale special.

There's about a .50c difference per single pack at present btw.

So, the string isn't constructed any differently? The gauges are almost the same as DR Pure Blues, my drug of choice, I noticed.

Still hexcore... If tension matters, get round core strings. I strongly dislike hexcore sets on Jazzmasters, too much tension. I like some relief in the strings for subtle tiny bends.

Yep.. just different gauges, same construction.

BT String Gauges: Plain Steel .011, .015, .019, Nickel Wound .028, .037, .050
Reg String Gauges: Plain Steel .011, .014, .018, Nickel Wound .028, .038, .049

I just looked and apparently they're on back-order. I see that alot with MF lately??

The principle has been around for a while. There are also a few people who propose a "graduated" tension.

You could have always bought single strings to make equal tension sets Smile You can buy those in bulk too.

As Jake mentions, hex and round course have different tensions and "feel" when it comes to bending.

There are a couple of things to consider:

Original strat pickups were designed with the stagger to compensate for the inherent magnetic differences between strings of different mass and gauge. On some guitars, especially those with old school pickup staggers, while the tension might be balanced, the OUTPUT may not be. Those of you that play on a plain 3rd without a "modern stagger" probably have 3rd strings that are overly loud.

Also, the "feel" of a string - and the ability to bend it more easily are not has to do with total length - on a strat the higher strings are comparatively harder to bend because they're longer past the nut. On an LP, it's the D and G that are harder to bend (comparatively). String tree make a difference.

I've tried to figure out if there is a relationship between tension and deflection - for example, if you bend a string the same distance - let's say 1/2" from center, will the resulting change in pitch be greater with greater tension or lower tension?

I will say, the B string is definitely the most irritating to me in a modern set - it's way to easy to bend compared to the others.

I accidentally put a 10 on my guitar last time I changed strings and I have to say, it was nice to have a high E that bent as easily as the B.

But my B string is already the loudest (I play on a wound 3rd and even with a vintage stagger it's still quieter) and if I increase it's mass any it's just going to get that much louder.

I've been going for balanced output - I'd love to have balanced output with balanced tension - if they only made pickups with pole pieces that really made a change when you screw them up or down - and all pole pieces should be adjustable!

Steve

I just wish they'd bulk pack the EXL116 and EXL117's. The 117's work great on my Jazzer (.011 to .056 plain G) The 116's are on my Les Paul and are .011 to .052 plain G. I get 'em from Just Strings but there priced individualy with no bulk discount. Argh
